What Materials Are Woven Tarpaulins Made From?
Woven tarpaulins are made from two main material types: PE, or polyethylene, and PVC, or polyvinyl chloride. PE tarpaulins are made from HDPE woven tape fabric with an additional LDPE coating. PVC tarpaulins consist of polyester mesh fabric with an additional PVC coating. Standard woven tarpaulins, such as those often found in DIY stores, are usually made from PE.
What Does the Weight Specification Mean?
The quality of woven tarpaulins with eyelets is specified in grams per square meter. A higher fabric weight means more material per square meter and therefore generally higher quality. The higher the weight per square meter, the greater the tear resistance, durability, and weather resistance. The total weight per square meter is made up of the woven fabric weight and the coating.
Woven tarpaulins are available from approximately 70 g/m². These are usually suitable only for hobby use and are not particularly tear-resistant or weather-resistant. Our standard range includes 100 g, 150 g, and 250 g woven tarpaulins. Higher grammages are supplied as PVC tarpaulins. These start at approximately 450 g/m² and can reach up to 1200 g/m² for truck tarpaulins, also known as industrial tarpaulins.
