"Not all tarpaulins are the same!" and we know the difference. So if you place great value on weather resistance, durability and a favourable price when making a purchase, then you've come to the right place.
As film experts, we import directly from the manufacturer and understand the requirements of a wood film. We provide you with the basic knowledge about wood films, as well as practical tips for applying the protective film on your firewood below. We have made a selection from the wide range of tarpaulins that can be used as "wood covers" and pay particular attention to ensuring excellent UV resistance.
To protect your firewood from all weather conditions while allowing sufficient air circulation in the wood stack or pile, you need a high-quality wood film.
The film should not only protect your firewood from all weather conditions (wind, rain, sun or snow), but should also last for a long time despite the weather conditions.
What is a wood cover tarpaulin?
A wood tarpaulin is a fabric-reinforced tarpaulin usually made of PE (polyethylene) or PVC (poly vinyl chloride). The fabric tarpaulins are waterproof and usually equipped with eyelets for covering firewood. The tarpaulins usually have reinforced edges to prevent the eyelets from tearing.
The typical private buyer uses the tarpaulin to protect the woodpile or the firewood rack in the outdoor area of their house. However, weather-resistant wood tarpaulins are also used in agriculture, forestry, the timber trade and industry. If the tarpaulin is properly fixed to your wood, the wood under the tarpaulin will stay dry and still get enough air to keep out mould, pests and bacteria.
In addition, all our high-quality wood tarpaulins are opaque, cold- and frost-resistant and also easy to fold. The solid PVC tarpaulins in our range are of "heavy quality", which means they are very wear-resistant and therefore extremely tear and weatherproof.
What is the wood cover tarpaulin used for?
Wood tarpaulins are used to cover firewood outdoors. Firewood should be stored and dried for at least 2 years to maintain the correct moisture content. Wood tarpaulin keeps all precipitation such as rain, snow and hail away from the valuable firewood.
Wood tarpaulins are used to cover all structures that are used to protect your firewood from the weather outdoors. These include:
- Stacks of wood
- Wood piles
- Firewood racks
- Wood in metres
Wood tarpaulins are not used to cover the entire pile of wood; the sides of the pile are usually left open to allow air circulation. This helps the firewood to dry.
What material is the wood cover tarpaulin made of?
When choosing the material, you should make sure that the film is UV-stable, tear-resistant and flexible. Cheap DIY store tarpaulins are often so damaged after just a few months by the UV light of intense sunlight that the wood film becomes porous, brittle and full of holes. Good wood tarpaulins can withstand the mechanical effects of wind and weather much better.
We offer our wood films in three different qualities:
- A conventional, but very tear-resistant and UV-resistant PE film (brown)
- A very stable tarpaulin in an above-average fabric film quality with 210 g/sqm (green)
- An extremely hard-wearing PVC tarpaulin with approx. 650 g/sqm (similar to truck tarpaulin, green)
Properties of the wood cover tarpaulins
We only use high-quality materials so that our wood tarpaulins can be easily and flexibly installed over your firewood pile. All films are UV-stable, in other words they will not fade or peel.
The tarpaulins are 100% waterproof, providing not only protection from water for the firewood, but also optimum corrosion protection for the metal components of your wood pile.
All our tarpaulins are tear-resistant, and the versions with aluminium eyelets also have a reinforced edge.
UV resistance of our tarpaulins
The most important thing for a suitable firewood cover film is its "anti-aging" properties, i.e. its resistance to long-term exposure to the sun. If you do not pay attention to the right quality here, the film will become brittle, porous and peel off after a very short time.
All our films, especially our solid PVC truck tarpaulins, guarantee durable and long-lasting use with up to 20 years of UV resistance.
Standard dimensions of the wood cover tarpaulins
As the firewood is covered along the length of your house, almost all standard tarpaulins are 1.5 metres wide and available in various lengths. The following dimensions are available for immediate dispatch here in our shop:

Tips for attaching wood cover tarpaulins
With every construction, it is important to ensure that:
- the wood is sufficiently protected from all weather influences
- the wood can breathe, there is sufficient fresh air circulating between the firewood and no condensation can form under the tarpaulin
- rainwater can run off the tarpaulin
- the wood tarpaulin does not "flutter" in wind and storms, as the mechanical stress and constant bending will cause your tarpaulin to break.
For this reason, there are various ways to secure the firewood film, which we explain below.
- Order wood film with aluminium eyelets, which can then be tensioned and fixed with cords or rubber ropes.
- Weigh down the tarpaulin with a sufficient number of stones or wooden slats
- Crafty hobbyists build small, upright wooden log towers under the tarpaulin so that no bags form on the tarpaulin when it rains and the rainwater can run off immediately, giving the tarpaulin a kind of gable.
What factors influence the durability of wood cover tarpaulins?
You should pay attention to the following factors when buying wood cover tarpaulins.
Quality of the tarpaulin material
There are very different tarpaulin qualities. We list and evaluate some examples here in order to advise you fairly, openly and correctly:
| 80-100 g PE fabric | Highly inferior quality, not suitable for covering wood |
| 150 g PE fabric | Acceptable quality, but cannot be used for more than 1-2 years |
| 200–250 g PE fabric | Good PE fabric quality, usually UV-resistant for 3 years, very tear-resistant |
| 600–650 g PVC fabric | Very robust truck tarpaulin with high tear resistance and high UV resistance |
| 900 g PVC fabric | High-end tarpaulin for the highest demands, extreme tear resistance |
UV Resistance
Unfortunately, this value is a trust-based factor and cannot be verified when purchasing a wood tarpaulin. However, we can advise you not to rely on overly generalised statements such as "UV-resistant", "weatherproof" and so on. Reputable suppliers will at least give you an approximate indication or even specify a concrete durability and UV resistance values. You will often receive incorrect advice in DIY stores because they simply lack the knowledge.
However, we can specify the following:
| 80–100 g PE fabric | No UV stabilisers, durable for less than 1 year under unfavourable conditions |
| 150 g PE fabric | Mostly without UV stabilisers, but usually durable for approx. 1-2 years (no guarantee) |
| 200–250 g PE fabric | 3-year guarantee from dm-folien |
| 600–650 g PVC fabric | UV-resistant for at least 10 years |
| 900 g PVC fabric | UV-resistant for at least 20 years |
How can I repair or glue my wood cover tarpaulin?
If your wood cover tarpaulin is relatively new and the tarpaulin has been mechanically damaged, there are ways of temporarily repairing the damage. We can recommend the following adhesive tapes for all polyethylene tarpaulins:
Black repair tape
White repair tape
Green repair tape
For PVC tarpaulins (truck tarpaulins) it is best to use the following product:
Repair patch for PVC tarpaulins
Accessories for wood cover tarpaulins
You will find the appropriate accessories for all of the above mentioned products in our shop:
- Baler twine: a classic twine used in agriculture, it is certainly the most cost-effective solution.
- Rubber rope: this durable and stretchy rubber with fabric cover is available from us by the metre or on a roll. It can be attached to your woodpile and the eyelets of the film using expander hooks and choke clamps.
- Tarpaulin tensioner: a rubber rope with hooks for easy fixing of the aluminium eyelets of your wood cover film.
