What is a packaging tape?
Packaging tape or packing tape is a narrow adhesive tape, usually made of film or paper. It is one-sided, self-adhesive on the back and wound into handy rolls on a core. The main purpose of the packaging tape is to seal cartons or wrap different products.
Purpose of the packaging tape
As the name suggests, self-adhesive packaging tape is mainly used for sealing boxes and shipping cartons. But packaging tapes are also used as wrapping material in shipping, production, offices, workshops, for pallets, rolls and machines. They are used in industry, trade, crafts and construction, horticulture and private households.
Which packaging tape is suitable for which purpose?
As there are countless types of packaging tape on the market, you should define the requirements for the packaging tape in advance.
- PP packaging tape is ideal for light to medium-weight cardboard packaging.
- Paper adhesive tapes are also suitable for light to medium-weight cardboard boxes, but can also be further reinforced with the help of threads.
- PVC package tapes, on the other hand, are suitable for medium to heavy cardboard boxes.
What material is packaging tape made of?
The most commonly used packaging tape is probably made of PP (polypropylene). However, packaging tapes made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or paper packaging tapes are also being used more and more often.
The low-cost PP packaging tape is characterised by its high adhesive strength and tear resistance. The packaging tape is easy to work with thanks to its easy and even unwinding. Depending on the adhesive, the PP packing tape unrolls quietly.
The more expensive PVC packaging tape has a much higher tear resistance than PP packaging tape. It is also easy and smooth to unroll and always unrolls quietly thanks to the natural rubber adhesive. Furthermore, the packaging tape is very cold and heat resistant.
Paper adhesive tape is very environmentally friendly as it is 100% recyclable. The smooth and even unwinding rounds off the paper tape. The tear resistance corresponds to that of PP packing tape.
How can I recognise the difference between PP adhesive tape and PVC adhesive tape?
The ballpoint pen test
The so-called ballpoint pen test can be used to find out whether it is a PP or PVC packaging tape. Poke a hole in the centre of the tape with a ballpoint pen or other sharp object.
The adhesive tape tears off crosswise: it is a polypropylene packaging tape.
There is a hole in the adhesive tape, without tearing: it is a PVC packaging tape.
The flame test
Light the parcel tape carefully and note the smoke and smell.
White smoke and little odour: it is a PP packaging tape.
Off odour, formation of smoke: this is a PVC packaging tape.
The stretch test
Pull off a piece of the packaging tape and stretch it to the width.
The tape colour remains the same: it is a PP packaging tape.
Tape colour changes: it is a PVC packaging tape.
What widths and lengths of packaging tapes are available?
The most common dimension for packaging tapes is 50 mm x 66 m (width x length). But there are of course many more options. For example, 12 mm wide packaging tapes are used to seal bags, with machine gluing the running length is increased to 990 metres.

What different types of adhesive are there?
There are three types of adhesive: acrylate, natural rubber and hotmelt.
Acrylate adhesive (industrially produced by polymerisation):
- High transparency
- Easy to roll off
- Loud or quiet unrolling
- Adhesive with low initial adhesive strength
- Good UV and ageing resistance
- Good permanent adhesive strength
Natural rubber adhesive (pure natural product – mixture of synthetic resin and solvent):
- Quiet unrolling
- Fast adhesion
- Very temperature resistant
- Environmentally friendly as it is a natural product
- Poor resistance to ageing
Hotmelt adhesive (synthetic granulate):
- Adhesive with high initial adhesive strength
- Very easy to unroll
- Only loud unrolling
- Sensitive to temperature fluctuations and UV exposure
- Not resistant to ageing
Quiet unrolling - loud unrolling
In addition to the type of adhesive and the adhesive strength, there is another quality factor for packaging tapes - quiet or loud unrolling. Pay attention to this feature when buying and opt for a quiet unwinding adhesive tape, as the noise can be very disturbing, especially when used with a hand dispenser. In addition, the adhesive strength is usually significantly higher with quietly unrolling tapes.
Optimal usage temperature of packaging tapes
The ideal usage temperature for PP packaging tape is +10° C to +20° C, for PVC packaging tape up to +40°C.
Strength of packaging tapes
In order to find a good packaging tape for yourself, you should test the desired packaging tape in advance. There are differences in the my- and adhesive strength as well as in the stretchability and tear resistance.
If you require extremely high tear resistance, we recommend thread-reinforced parcel tape. You can use it to seal medium and heavy packaging. If you are sealing heavy cardboard packaging, we recommend the "Ultra Strong" filament tape. This tape is fibre-reinforced and therefore has a very high tear resistance. The typical packaging tape is either brown (Havana), transparent or white. However, we always offer our customers much more than just a standard product. Standard 50 mm packaging tapes are packed in 6 rolls per pack and 36 rolls per box. If the width of the tape is halved, the quantity per box is doubled. For example:
