What is a silo sandbag?
Silo sandbags are narrow, long bags that are filled with gravel (rarely with sand). The main purpose is to seal agricultural silos (bunker silos). They are also used to stabilise silage film, underlay film and silage protection grids.
What are silo sandbags made of?
Our sacks are made from the highest quality monofilament fabric. Monofil fabric is tear-resistant, stable and durable. It is made from the environmentally friendly polypropylene (PP) plastic and consists of many individual fibres. Individual monofilament fibres are almost reminiscent of metal wire. They are extremely tear-resistant, which is why they cannot be torn by hand.
What are silo sandbags used for?
These types of sacks are mainly used to weigh down silage film, underlay film (suction film) and silo protection grids. The size of silage sand bags is optimised for use on / in the silo. The silo sand bag is quite narrow, yet very long. The bag is therefore not too heavy but sufficiently weighted, and the length of the silo sandbag, between 800 and 1000 mm, ensures simple, effective, and fast covering of the silo. The silage sand bags from dm-folien offer you optimum support when it comes to covering your silage.
Are silo sandbags also suitable as flood bags?
Silage bags can also be used in case of flooding. Due to their length, large areas can be covered with just a few bags. They are sufficiently stable and stackable enough to be ideal for this purpose. However, dm-folien GmbH also has special PP flood sandbags in stock, available for sale at all times. You can find special UV-resistant bags for flood dams here:

How are silo sandbags filled?
Ideally, a silage bag is filled with coarse-grained round gravel. The silage bag should only be filled to a certain level. This ensures better positioning and good sealing. In most cases, silo sandbags are filled with gravel or sand to ensure ideal water permeability. Silage sand bags are available in various sizes.

Filling silo sandbags
Another advantage is the easy handling of the bags, which is ensured by filling them correctly. The bags can be filled very quickly and easily with a suitable funnel or a hand shovel.
Is it possible to buy pre-filled silo sandbags?

How heavy are filled silo sandbags?
A completely filled sandbag weighs anywhere between 11 kg and 14 kg, depending on the size, filling quantity, and filling material. The small silo sandbags are therefore very easy to "handle" and can also be easily transported by people who are not physically very strong.
How are silo bags sealed?
Depending on the design, silo sandbags can be sealed in different ways. Once the bag is sufficiently filled, an integrated drawstring, separate twisted wires or cable ties can be used for closing. All three methods ensure that the sandbags are tightly and securely closed.
What types of silo sandbags are available?
We offer silo sandbags in the following versions:
- Standard sandbag, with carrying handle, without closure, wire bag closure is supplied free of charge
- Sandbag with closure / drawstring and with carrying handle
- Filled silo sandbag, with carrying handle and sealed with wire bag closure, filled with approx. 12 kg of round gravel, measuring 250 x 800 mm.

Durability, UV resistance and frost resistance of silo bags
Our special monofilament fabric made of polypropylene is extremely weatherproof, UV-resistant and frost-resistant. The bags can be used for a very long time if used properly.
TIP for extending the durability of the bags
We would like to give you an important tip to extend the shelf life of the bags enormously.
Each individual silage sand bag is labelled on one side with a so-called reversible label. This reversible identification strip (reversible strip) is simply a marker to show which side of the bags is facing upwards and downwards. Experienced users turn the silage sand bag every year to expose both sides of the bags equally to the weather and UV radiation. If the bag is always placed with the same side facing upwards, one side will be damaged much more quickly by UV radiation and other weather influences. If you follow this simple rule, the lifespan of the silo sandbags will be doubled in the best case scenario and you will save a lot of money and labour with this simple trick. We also advise you to cover used silo sandbags when they are not in use for short periods or to store them in a room or area protected from the sun.
What colours are available for silage sandbags?
Silo sandbags are usually coloured green. Occasionally, you can also find silo sandbags in black. However, the colour choice is purely visual and has no influence on the quality, UV resistance and durability of the bags.

Unfilled silo sand bags are dispatched by parcel service for orders up to approx. 30 kg. Filled silo sand bags are very heavy and are only delivered to our customers on pallets by a forwarding agent.
