What is a film sack?

There are two different types of film sacks: flat sacks are sacks without a side gusset or bottom gusset, which are made from a flat tubular film with a bottom seam. A flat sack is basically a tubular film cut or blank that is welded at an open point.

A film sack is always open on one side for filling. These bags are produced fully automatically at high speeds on industrial, professional bagging machines. Therefore, the price of PE sacks is very favourable.

What can film sacks be used for?

PE sacks are used in industry, trade, construction, healthcare (hospitals), horticulture and private households. PE sacks are used for storage, sorting, despatch, disposal, archiving and much more. They protect all goods from dirt, dust, moisture, weather, damage and prying eyes. As mentioned above, there is an incredible variety of possible applications. Here are just a few examples.

Waste disposal / Waste management

Refuse sacks, waste sacks, disposal sacks, asbestos sacks (asbestos disposal), mineral wool sacks (mineral wool disposal), polystyrene sacks; sacks for files, waste paper, film waste, green waste, garden waste, hedge trimmings, sawdust; as chip bags or chip collection sacks for extraction systems and much more.

Design and material of film sacks

Not all film sacks are the same. There are countless options in terms of material and design to fulfil the user's requirements. Packaging bags are usually made of polyethylene, mostly LDPE (low density polyethylene), MDPE (medium density polyethylene) or HDPE (high density polyethylene). We can offer you monolayer or multilayer sacks (so-called COEX sacks). You can choose between 1A material (virgin material) or regenerate (recycled material). PE sacks made from 1A material are food-safe and can be supplied with a food certificate upon request.

On request, film sacks can be produced with a bottom or side seam. A double bottom seam is also possible. These PE sacks are available with a bottom gusset (flat sacks) or side gusset (side gusseted sacks). All film sacks can be needled, perforated or punched according to your specifications. The perforation or needling ensures oxygen exchange, for example, with warm and moist products. Needled or perforated bags also ensure air softening when the bags are sealed. Incidentally, polyethylene bags can be welded without any problems. A welded seam made with a professional welding machine is very stable and tear-resistant.

Plastic sacks can be produced for you either loose in cardboard boxes or perforated on rolls, with or without a band. The format is freely selectable. Whether you need landscape or lengthwise format sacks, square or rectangular ones, long, short, wide or narrow, it doesn't matter. This wish will also be fulfilled. Cube-shaped sacks, as crate sacks / crate hoods or valve crate sacks can be realised.

Antistatic sacks are used for electrical parts. VCI ensures anti-corrosion. Do you want to stack PE sacks on pallets? We equip them with anti-slip properties. On request, we can make them non-slip on the inside and on the outside. Embossing on the PE bags also ensures that they are less slippery and can be stacked without any problems. If the plastic sacks are to be stored outdoors for a longer period of time, we ensure that the sacks are UV-resistant / UV-stable. Of course, we can also supply you with PE sacks that are dustproof, waterproof or liquid-tight. Would you like to shrink the plastic sacks? Of course, we offer you packaging bags in monaxial shrinking and biaxial shrinking. Speaking of shrinkage and high temperatures: polyethylene is heat-resistant up to approx. 70°C. If you require higher values, please send us an enquiry with the intended use. Last but not least, we also offer paper and biodegradable sacks on request.

Thickness of film sacks

PE sacks can be produced from approx. 5-400 my (µ). And the same applies here, regardless of whether you want thin, strong or extra strong plastic sacks, we will realise your wishes. We can fulfil any strength or thickness from a minimum order weight of 100 kg.

If you are unsure which film thickness is suitable for your intended use, we will be happy to advise you. If you are already using plastic bags but do not know how thick the material is, simply send us a material sample so that we can determine the film thickness for you.

We also think outside the box. It is often possible to reduce the film thickness while maintaining the same tear resistance, thereby saving costs and resources. After all, it is not necessarily the thickness of the film material that is decisive, but rather its tear-resistance in the end.

The difference between film sacks and film bags

What is the difference between a sack and a bag? There is no clear answer to this question, but it depends on the size. We have decided on the following definition:

We refer to a flat bag with dimensions up to 400 x 600 mm (width x length).
We refer to bags larger than 400 x 600 mm as flat sacks.

Colours of the plastic sacks

Standard packaging sacks are usually plain or transparent, as it is usually preferable to see and recognise the contents. However, it is, of course, also possible to fulfil your other wishes. For example, sacks can be coloured to be opaque (non-transparent) or translucent (see-through). A translucent colouring means that the film is not 100% opaque. Opaque means 100% coverage.

For bin liners or refuse sacks, which fall under the category of film sacks, blue colour is a common choice. However, standard bin liners are also available in yellow, red, green, white, black, grey, plain or "cloudy". As bin liners are usually made from regenerate (recycled material), bags that are not coloured are "cloudy", which is due to the simple and inexpensive recycled materials. A bin liner should be cheap, so the cloudy colour is accepted.

Recently, sacks used for food packaging have been coloured slightly blue (translucent blue or transparent blue). The reason for this colouring is that pieces of the film material can be recognised immediately if the food is contaminated.

Film sacks with a customised print

PE sacks can be printed as desired. However, no "ready-made" storage sacks are used to produce printed PE sacks. Instead, the sack is made from scratch: tubular film is first created, then printed, and finally converted into sacks in the next step. The film of the sacks must first be pre-treated (corona print pre-treatment) so that the print is abrasion-resistant.

The type of printing is up to the customer. Any individual print, such as a company logo, advertising print, warning notice (e.g., suffocation hazard), labelling, or product description, is possible. Your customised print is possible on one side as well as on both sides. Our print shops can provide you with single-colour, multi-colour and photorealistic printing. The print colours are selected according to RAL or Pantone. Before we print the tubular film, we will provide you with a print approval (proof) so that you can be sure that everything will be realised according to your ideas.

Incidentally, a recycling logo or recycling symbol is not a complex print. These simple markings are printed on the tubular film using an inline process and are free of charge in most cases.

Weather resistance, UV resistance and frost resistance of polyethylene

Polyethylene is generally frost-resistant, frost-proof and cold-resistant. If you wish to use the sacks at extremely low temperatures, please inform our sales department in advance so that we can discuss the conditions.

If polyethylene sacks are to be used outdoors for a longer period of time, please inform us before ordering. Polyethylene without any additives can become brittle and fragile after just a few months in UV radiation. But of course we also have a solution for you here: by adding so-called UV masterbatches, the film is made UV-resistant and UV-stable. The UV protection can be controlled relatively precisely.

Are film bags food-safe?

PE sacks can be used for the packaging of food without restriction if:

• the film is made from 100% new material or 1A quality material
• the converting machines and extruders are clean and uncontaminated
• a food certificate is provided

Always check in advance whether the packaging bag of your choice is suitable for food packaging. Never use PE sacks made from regenerated or recycled material for packaging food.

Density of the polyethylene material

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) has a density of 0.92–0.935
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) has a density of 0.94–0.97

Polyethylene and the environment

Polyethylene is a highly environmentally friendly material. It is more environmentally friendly than paper, biodegradable or compostable plastics, jute, cotton and so on. But why is polyethylene environmentally friendly?

• Polyethylene is infinitely recyclable (thermoplastic)
• Polyethylene has an extremely high recycling rate, as PE recycling material is highly compensated
• Polyethylene is extremely tear-resistant and can therefore be manufactured with much thinner layers than the materials mentioned above
• Polyethylene contains no plasticisers, heavy metals or other harmful substances
• The incineration / disposal of polyethylene is completely harmless. Only carbon dioxide and water are produced during incineration. It should be added here that incineration only represents a small part, since recycling is much more profitable than incineration.
