What is a Big Bag?

Big Bags are large fabric bags made of PP. They have lifting loops, which are made of polypropylene. The name "Big Bags" comes from their high capacity, which ranges from 120 to 2,500 litres. In international usage, the term FIBC is commonly used, which stands for Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container.

The maximum permissible loading weight is between 500 and 1,500 kg, depending on the Big Bag version - the Safety Working Load (SWL) is usually printed on the Big Bag label. Big Bags can be uncoated or coated.

What types of Big Bags are there?

There are seven standard types of Big Bags. Here we provide you with an overview of the different Big Bag types that you can buy from us:

• We offer two different types of standard Big Bags. The uncoated Big Bags are suitable for transporting loose, non-hazardous materials. These Big Bags are very convenient and inexpensive. The coated Big Bags, on the other hand, are suitable for transporting moist and/or fine-dust materials because their coating makes them watertight and dustproof.
• Big Bags for stones: These Big Bags are particularly suitable for transporting stones, bulk goods and gravel. Thanks to their high fabric strength, they are particularly tear-resistant and stable. You can also use these Big Bags if you want to transport sand.
• Big Bags for building materials are normally stored outside. When it comes to building materials, it should be noted that the same product weighs more when wet than when dry. We offer Big Bags for building materials such as gravel or sand with a protective apron so you don't have to worry about the maximum load capacity. Once the Big Bag is filled, it can be easily closed with the binding strap to protect your material.
• Big Bags for firewood/wood: There are two types of Big Bags for firewood. Big bags with air-permeable mesh fabric and Big Bags with ventilation strips (airstripes/ventilation slots), developed for products with natural breathability. In addition to wood storage (firewood, wood pallets), the ventilated Big Bags are also suitable for storing animal feed, grain, or harvested products. The bottom loops make it particularly easy to empty the ventilated Big Bags.
• Big Bags for mineral wool: For the transport of mineral wool or artificial mineral fibers (AMF), so-called AMF Big Bags are used, which have specially coated fabric and a closable apron with a tie band. These Big Bags have warning labels on the outside regarding potential hazards, in accordance with TRGS 521. The big bags are used for the disposal of mineral fibre waste such as rock wool or glass wool.
• Big Bags for asbestos: The asbestos Big Bags (or plate bags) are coated on the inside or reinforced with an inner bag (PE inliner), in accordance with current EU standards. This type of Big Bag has multilingual hazard warnings printed on it. Our special plate bags are suitable for the transport and disposal of whole asbestos plates. We recommend the Asbestos Big Bag of 90 x 90 x 110 cm for the disposal of asbestos waste.
• Big Bags for gardening: We recommend small uncoated standard Big Bags for gardening work. These are easier to handle and are perfectly sufficient for gardening work because no (special) coating is required for normal garden waste. You can easily find small Big Bags in our online shop.

Explanation of the specification terms

Lifting loops: The loops are used to lift filled Big Bags with a forklift truck, tractor or crane. The force is distributed evenly over the lifting loops. Most Big Bags have four lifting loops, while a few have six. Big Bags for mineral wool require no or only two lifting loops due to the low transport weight.

Apron: Big Bags with aprons are often used to protect the material in the Big Bag from the weather conditions. Rain, for example, can increase the weight of sand in the Big Bag many times over if a Big Bag is used without the protective apron. The apron of the Big Bag can be sealed watertight and dust-tight with the sewn-on tie band.

Inlet/outlet: An inlet/outlet nozzle is ideal for filling Big Bags quickly and neatly. Similar to an apron, it is closed with the sewn-on tie band after filling. We offer Big Bags with an outlet nozzle for easy emptying. The outlet is located on the bottom of the Big Bag and is closed with the tie band before filling. When the Big Bag is to be emptied, undo the knot in the cord. The bulk material in the Big Bag, such as sand or gravel, then flows downward. In this case, the bag typically measures 35 x 50 cm.

Load capacity: Big Bags require different load capacities for different applications. The Big Bag load capacity is specified in the form of the SWL value (Safety Working Load). The Safety Working Load is the maximum permissible load weight, ranging from 500 to 1,500 kg. This value is printed on the label on the inside of the Big Bag.

Inliner: With an inliner, you prevent the material from coming into contact with the PP fabric allowing you to store extremely moist or harmful materials. Animal feed is also often packed in Big Bags with inliners.

Ventilation: Big Bags for wood have ventilation slots due to their natural breathability. These vary depending on the application requirements and design. Thanks to the air-permeable mesh fabric, Big Bags for wood can also be used for storing grain, harvested products or animal feed.

CC loops: Cross corner loops are lifting loops that are positioned over the corner.

Cord in the hem: Big Bags for mineral fibre waste have a cord in the hem for easy closure. The opening is closed using the integrated cord and then knotted.

Tie band: We also offer KMF disposal bags with a tie band. The binding tape is tied around the opening and knotted.

Areas of application for Big Bags

The areas of application for Big Bags are extremely diverse. In the construction sector, Big Bags are used to transport and store bulk goods, such as sand or gravel, while in the timber industry, they are filled with wood or firewood. Mineral wool (KMF) is collected and disposed of in Big Bags during demolition or renovation work. Eternit plates (asbestos plates) are disposed of in large Big Bags for asbestos - our plate bags (Big Bags with inner coating) are particularly suitable for this.

Waste disposal with Big Bags

Compared to waste containers, Big Bags are more space-saving and flexible. In addition, no delivery is necessary and there are no rental costs for the container.

When disposing of asbestos in Big Bags, please note that this material can be categorised as hazardous (keyword: work safety). Special precautionary measures, such as wearing suitable protective clothing, must be observed!

The right location for filling Big Bags

Once Big Bags are completely filled, they can weigh up to 1,500 kg and are therefore difficult or even impossible to move. Therefore, pay attention to the following aspects when choosing the storage location:

• Load the Big Bag where it will be collected or transported away. If this is not possible, we have the following tip: if it is possible (and necessary!), place the Big Bag on a Euro pallet. This way, the filled Big Bag can be moved quickly and easily afterwards.
• If a crane is used for collection, the Big Bag should be placed no more than four metres from the roadside.
• Avoid placement areas with trees or street lamps. These can hinder the removal.
• Obtain a special permit if the Big Bag is to be placed in a public area (road, grass verge).

Filling Big Bags

In addition to ultra-modern filling systems, which are primarily used in large industrial companies, special filling hoppers are also used in the construction and timber industries.

Note: When filling Big Bags, ensure that they are loaded evenly. Ideally, heavy waste should be loaded at the bottom. The subsequent transport and unloading process can then take place as safely and quickly as possible.

Transport and emptying of Big Bags

With many models, Big Bags can be transported safely and conveniently even when full. Thanks to particularly tear-resistant lifting loops, Big Bags can be transported with a forklift truck, tractor or crane.

Once the Big Bag has been transported, you can empty the Big Bags quickly and easily thanks to the outlet nozzles. Versions with coated material and outlet nozzles are particularly suitable for fine dust and/or moist materials, as they are dust-tight Big Bags.

What do I do with the Big Bag after use?

After emptying Big Bags and disposing of the transported material, the question often arises: what happens to the Big Bag afterwards? As Big Bags are made of polypropylene, they can be reused multiple times. However, it should be noted that the safety factor must be 6:1 for heavy transport. For this reason, we recommend storing the waterproof Big Bags away from the sun - the next project is sure to come!

Big Bags can also be disposed of in the yellow sack or yellow bin - except for asbestos Big Bags.
