What is baler twine?
Baler twine is made from numerous individual fibres of polypropylene (PP), which are twisted together to form a durable string or cord. Combined with carefully selected raw materials, these fibres ensure the twine’s strength and tear resistance. After production, the baler twine is wound onto spools, which come in various sizes and weights.
What is baler twine made of?
Baler yarn is produced using two main materials: polypropylene and natural agave fibres, the latter of which is known as sisal. Sisal is a natural fibre coated with a layer of oil to enhance its usability but decomposes over time, making it ideal for organic farming applications.
Summary
Material 1: Polypropylene (synthetic, plastic, no PVC)
Material 2: Sisal (natural fiber, oiled, no hemp)
What can baler twine be used for?
Baler twine is used to secure pressed hay, straw, silage, or haylage, keeping the material together for transport and storage. Sisal baling twine is primarily used for square bales (large bales) and high-pressure bales, but it is less commonly used for round bales. In such cases, it is typically used in older baler models without net binding. Additionally, baling twine is frequently used in viticulture to tie vines.
Pallets / Transport Securing
Binding yarn is also used to secure pallets during transport. Some companies replace stretch film with yarns to ensure better protection. We supply several large greengrocers with PP twine to secure vegetable pallets during transport.
Bundling Wood
Baler twine is sometimes used to tie round bundles of wood. The sturdiest versions (110 m - 130 m) are used for this purpose, wrapped around the bundle multiple times and knotted, either manually or with suitable tools.
Other Applications
Gardening tasks such as tying cucumbers, tomatoes, and other plants or shrubs; sealing sacks, rubbish bags, and garden sacks; bundling brushwood, branches, and other garden waste.
Wooden Horse Manes
An unconventional use for agricultural yarn is creating manes for wooden horses and rocking horses. In this case, the thickness of the yarn is less important, while the colour plays a more significant role.
In what thicknesses and dimensions is baler twine available?
Baler twine is produced in various thicknesses, measured in running (linear) metres per kilogram. The required twine thickness depends on the intended use and the type of crop being baled.
For square bales, relatively thick twine (10–15 metres per kg) is used, depending on the type of baler and the material being baled. Thinner twine (250–400 metres per kg) is used for high-pressure bales, as the baling pressure and the weight of the bales are lower. Very thin twine (750–1000 metres per kg) is used for round bales and in viticulture.
Definition of baler twine thickness
In Germany, the thickness of agricultural twine is defined in metres per kilogram. Small bale twine type 400, for example, has a length of 400 metres per kilogram. The higher the number, the thinner the twine. Below is a brief summary of the running length for each type of twine:
Synthetics
| Thickness | Running length per kg (m/kg) | Weight per spool | Running length per spool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 1000 | approx. 1000 m / kg | 5 kg | 5,000 m |
| Type 750 | approx. 750 m / kg | 5 kg | 3,750 m |
| Type 600 | approx. 600 m / kg | 5 kg | 3,000 m |
| Type 500 | approx. 500 m / kg | 5 kg | 2,500 m |
| Type 400 | approx. 400 m / kg | 5 kg | 2,000 m |
| Type 350 | approx. 350 m / kg | 5 kg | 1,750 m |
| Type 320 | approx. 320 m / kg | 5 kg | 1,600 m |
| Type 250 | approx. 250 m / kg | 5 kg | 1,250 m |
| Type 150 | approx. 150 m / kg | 9 kg | 1,350 m |
| Type 130 | approx. 130 m / kg | 9 kg | 1,170 m |
| Type 110 | approx. 110 m / kg | 9 kg | 990 m |
Natural Sisal
| Thickness | Running length per kg (m/kg) | Weight per spool | Running length per spool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 300 | approx. 300 m/kg | 4.2 kg | 1,260 m |
| Type 200 | approx. 200 m/kg | 9.0 kg | 1,800 m |
| Type 150 | approx. 150 m/kg | 9.0 kg | 1,450 m |
m/kg is a common abbreviation for metres per kilogram.
Tear resistance of baler twine
Materials with varying thicknesses naturally differ in tensile strength, tear resistance, and knot strength. We are happy to provide you with these details.

What colours of baler twine are available?
PP cords are available in a wide range of colours across Europe and worldwide. Common examples include:
- blue
- black
- red
- orange
- green
- white / natural
- brown
- beige
- purple / violet
- mint
Sisal cord, or sisal baler twine, is only available in its natural colour. For PP cords, blue is by far the most commonly used colour.
What packaging units are available?
Agricultural yarns are typically bundled into double packs containing two balls or spools. The weight of each spool or roll varies between 5 and approximately 11 kg, depending on the thickness of the yarn. Pallets are generally packed with around 800 to 1100 kg. If you have any special requests, we will be happy to discuss the details with you.
Differences & Processing of baler twine
There are many different types and designs of twine available. Twine comes in soft, hard, cross-linked, or fibrillated forms.
Characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of hard yarn
Hard yarns have exceptionally high tensile strength due to their tightly twisted construction. However, the disadvantage of hard yarns is that they are more difficult to knot or to join individual spools. Additionally, hard baler twine causes increased wear on the knotters of the baler.
Characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of soft yarn
Soft yarns are highly flexible and can be easily knotted together. They cause significantly less wear on the knotters but have slightly lower tensile strength compared to hard yarns made from the same raw materials.
Characteristics of fibrillated yarns
Fibrillated yarn refers to yarn that has a ‘net-like’ structure. If you carefully pull the yarn apart, you can observe a distinct net pattern. This type of yarn is very soft, flexible, and relatively tear-resistant.
What brands are there?
There are various brands and manufacturers on this huge market. Some of the well-known manufacturers and brands are listed below:
- AgriPlus
- Ulith superpress
- Tewe (Teufelberger)
- Juta
- Baumhüter
- Rallenkötter
- Brandenburger
- Fybron
- Impos
- X-Press
- Harvest
- Cotesi
Major machine manufacturers such as Krone, Claas, John Deere, New Holland, Case, Fendt, Welger, Göweil and Deutz also offer their own brand products.
UV resistance & Durability of baler twine
All agricultural yarns are UV-stable and UV-resistant for at least 12 months. The UV protection added during production ensures that the yarns maintain the required tear resistance for 12 months outdoors. Additionally, PP yarn is frost-resistant and weatherproof. In general, plastics such as polypropylene are both frost-proof and cold-resistant.
Baler twine and the environment
Sisal twine (or sisal rope) is made from the fibres of agave leaves. As a natural product, sisal decomposes over time. On the other hand, PP (polypropylene) can be recycled or incinerated without leaving any residue or releasing toxic substances. Polypropylene can be repeatedly recycled without any loss of quality, making it a very environmentally friendly plastic.
