Advantages and disadvantages of an HDPE sun sail

An HDPE sun sail is both water- and wind-permeable. Its breathable fabric prevents heat from building up underneath, allowing air to circulate freely while still providing shade. Light rain can pass through the fabric without causing pooling, but keep in mind that HDPE is not fully waterproof.

How to install a sun sail

1. Choosing the location and size

Before purchasing a sun sail, select the best location. Position it so that it provides sufficient shade while hanging freely in the wind. It’s important to install the sun sail with a slope of approximately 20–40°, allowing rainwater to drain safely. A drop of around 30 cm per metre is recommended. This usually results in a lower edge height of about 2.0 m and a higher edge of 2.5–2.7 m. Depending on the sail shape (triangular or rectangular), different corner heights may be appropriate.

To determine the correct sail size, measure the area you want to shade before ordering. To allow for tensioning, the sail should generally be at least 30 cm smaller than the measured shading area.
