What is a silo protection grid?
Silage protection grid is a net made of very thin, wire-like monofilament threads. It is used to cover bunker silos (silo cover) and silo bales, as protection for silage films against wild animals and against extreme weather conditions.
Intended use of silo protection grids
The silo net is placed over the silage film and usually weighted down with silage sandbags to protect the silo. Our silo protection grid prevents damage to the silage film and bale film (wrapping film) due to the following influences:
- As bird protection or bird deterrent against crows, ravens, magpies and other birds
- Wild animals such as foxes, deer and wild boars
- Rodents and clawed animals such as mice, rats and martens
- Pets such as dogs and cats
It also protects your valuable silage against human vandalism and against impacts or damage caused by machinery during daily work on the silo.
Weather influences such as hail, heavy rain, storms and UV radiation
Tip: Here is a new method for preventing damage to silage bales by birds, crows and ravens without using silage netting:
For some time now, we have exclusively offered a patented, transparent, see-through wrapping film in our range. The main reason for the transparency of the film was actually to be able to view the silage at any time.
However, it has turned out that this is not the only advantage. All our customers tell us that they have not noticed any bird infestation on bales wrapped with our transparent Crystal wrapping film.
So if you are experiencing heavy bird infestation and problems with damaged bales, why not give our Crystal wrapping film a try? You can order individual rolls for trials here in the shop.
How are silo protection grids used?
Silo protection grid is mainly used for bunker silos and biogas plant silos, but is also used for silage bales such as round bales and square bales. The main focus, however, is on protecting your valuable silage.
The silage protection grid is placed over the load to be covered (silage film in the bunker silo, silage bales, straw bales) and ideally weighted down with silage sandbags so that the silage cover net is not "blown away by the wind" due to air ingress.
If weighting down with silage bags is not enough, all silage grids from size 6 x 10 m are equipped with additional loops across the entire width. You can tie more sandbags to these additional loops to make the weighting even more reliable.
Material and quality of silo protection grids
Silage protection netting is woven from individual, very sturdy monofilament yarns. Monofilament is made from polyethylene (HDPE) and offers enormous tear resistance and stability.
A single monofilament thread gives the impression of a metal wire when pulled. If you try to tear a monofilament thread with your bare hands, you are more likely to cut yourself than break the thread. It is better not to try this.
All silage protection fabrics are hemmed all round to prevent the fabric from "fraying". The seams of our silo covers are of very high quality.
Our product can safely be characterised as being of absolute premium quality. It offers you a long service life and safe tread resistance. The service life of the silo nets is estimated at over 10 years and many customers have already been using them for much longer.
Our range offers you two different qualities: Standard (220 g, comparable to TEX 240) and Extra strong (comparable to Tec 300).
UV resistance of silo protection grids
Due to the chosen HDPE monofilament material and the special production method, silo protection grids are inherently highly UV stable. The addition of UV stabilisers (UV protection masterbatch) during production results in even greater durability and makes our end product highly weatherproof and extremely UV-resistant. Polyethylene is also cold-resistant, frost-resistant and frost-proof.
Repairing silo protection grids
If the silo protection grid is damaged after many years, it is usually not worth repairing. As the price of these silo covers is now so low, the time required to professionally repair the damage is out of all proportion. Even sewing is very time-consuming and other methods do not lead to a satisfactory result either.
Colours of silo protection grids
Silage netting is usually offered in green. Sometimes you can also see silage netting in black. However, we prefer silage nets in green as it blends in with the landscape.
Silage protection grid with eyelets
Why don't silo fabric actually have eyelets? Silo covers are usually weighted down with silo bags and are therefore not provided with eyelets.
However, if you want a protective net with eyelets, we have a very practical solution for you. We have unique eyelets that can be opened and closed again and again. These eyelets are very easy and quick to attach to the silage protection fabric and have a higher tear resistance than conventional metal eyelets or brass eyelets.
If you want to remove the eyelets again, this can be done just as quickly as attaching the eyelet.
Buying used silo protection grids
We are repeatedly asked by customers whether we can offer used silo protection grids. We generally advise against this, as it is not always known how long the net was in use and how far the UV damage has progressed.
As mentioned above, the price of silage nets has become very favourable in recent years. Buying used silage nets is therefore not worthwhile at all and would involve unnecessary risks.

Misuse of silo protection grids
We are familiar with the misuse of silo grids as covers for sandy areas, such as sandpits for private use, kindergartens, playgrounds and beach volleyball courts.
They are also used for wind protection and privacy protection, whereby we recommend the following products for these two purposes:
- Wind protection nets for stables
- Shading nets / shade netting and fence screens
- Construction fence tarpaulins
- Construction fence net
Customs tariff number of silo grids
The customs tariff number for wire mesh/silo nets is 54077200.
