Edge Insulation Strip, 300 x 20 mm / 25 m, Gray

Edge Insulation Strip, 300 × 20 mm / 25 m, Gray These PE foam edge insulation strips are specifically designed for use in industrial and residential floor construction. They are suitable for all standard wet and dry screeds as well as concrete floors. Installed along walls and fixed building elements, the strips absorb movement in the screed and prevent bonding with adjacent components. This allows the screed to expand and contract freely, reducing tensile stress and helping to prevent cracking. In addition, the edge insulation strips provide thermal insulation, sound insulation and affective moisture barrier.

What Are Edge Insulation Strips?

Edge insulation strips (also known as perimeter insulation strips or screed perimeter strips) are narrow strips made of elastic insulating material – usually polyethylene foam (PE foam). They are installed along walls and other building elements before laying screed or floor coverings.

What Are Edge Insulation Strips Used For?

Edge insulation strips (also referred to as perimeter insulation strips or edge strips) are used in construction to separate screed surfaces from adjacent building elements. They fulfil several important functions:

  1. Sound insulation / acoustic decoupling: Edge insulation strips prevent the transmission of impact sound and structure-borne noise from the screed slab to walls or other building components. Without edge insulation strips, the screed would create acoustic bridges, allowing noise to travel into adjacent rooms via the walls.
  2. Stress relief and crack prevention: Screed expands when heated (e.g. by underfloor heating) and contracts again when cooling. Edge insulation strips create an elastic movement joint, allowing the screed to expand freely without pressing against the wall and causing cracks.
  3. Clean separation & prevention of thermal bridges: Edge insulation strips thermally separate the screed, floor covering and, where applicable, the underfloor heating system from the wall. This prevents unwanted heat loss and improves overall insulation performance.
  4. Clean and precise finish: Edge insulation strips ensure a visually clean separation between screed or floor covering and the wall.

Edge insulation strips are mandatory for floating screeds. They provide improved sound insulation, prevent cracking, ensure thermal separation and enable properly executed screed joints.

Step-By-Step: How To Install Edge Insulation Strips Correctly (Including Required Accessories)

Screed insulation is installed after sealing the base slab and before laying the underfloor heating. Below you will find a step-by-step guide for the correct installation of edge insulation strips.

  1. Prepare the substrate: The floor must be clean, dry and free from major unevenness. Before installing the edge insulation strips, the thermal insulation or underfloor heating system is usually laid.
  2. Install the edge insulation strips: The strips are installed along all walls, columns, door frames, supports and other fixed building elements. Edge insulation strips can be fixed using various methods: integrated self-adhesive backing, nail gun, stapler or adhesive tape. The strip must be positioned against the screed build-up and must extend above the finished floor level. This prevents acoustic bridges and avoids contact between the floor covering and the wall when the floor heats up.
  3. Insulate protrusions with edge strips: All protrusions such as pipes, columns, plinths, stairs and supports must be wrapped with insulation strips. The strip can simply be wrapped around the element and fixed with adhesive tape at the joint.
  4. Lay impact sound insulation: Once the edge insulation strips are installed, the next step is laying the impact sound insulation. For this purpose, PE foam sheets are commonly used and cut to size with a utility knife. Typically, two layers are laid with staggered joints. The joints between the panels must be covered by the upper layer. This ensures optimal reduction of structure-borne and impact sound.
  5. Create the moisture barrier: Install the moisture barrier using construction film. Lay the film in overlapping strips and seal the overlaps with adhesive tape. The film must also be connected to the edge insulation strip using tape. Ensure that no gaps or leaks remain. Otherwise, moisture may later accumulate in the screed insulation and damage the floor structure.

Our Checklist - Everything Important At a Glance

  • You will need edge insulation strips, construction film, adhesive tape, impact sound insulation, a cutting tool (e.g., utility knife), and, if necessary, a nail gun or stapler.
  • The edge insulation must run continuously around the entire room. There must be no interruptions. The edge insulation must be positioned against the screed build-up and extend above the finished floor level.
  • Lay two layers of impact sound insulation in a staggered pattern so that joints between insulation panels are fully covered.
  • Ensure that there are no leaks in the moisture barrier, as these could later reduce living comfort.
  • For special fire protection requirements, mineral wool should be used instead of LDPE edge insulation strips.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

General & Application

Edge insulation strips separate screed surfaces from walls and adjacent building elements. They prevent sound bridges, allow the screed to expand freely and contribute to improved thermal and moisture insulation. They are mandatory for floating screeds.

Edge insulation strips must be installed at all fixed building elements, including:
  • Walls and partition walls
  • Columns, supports and pillars
  • Door frames and wall projections
  • Pipes, plinths and service shafts
Important: The insulation must be installed continuously without interruptions.

Yes. According to DIN 18560, edge insulation strips are required for floating screeds. They prevent cracking, internal stress and sound transmission. They are also mandatory for underfloor heating systems.

Processing & Installation

Edge insulation strips must extend above the finished floor build-up.They should cover the screed thickness, floor covering and include a safety allowance. Excess material is trimmed cleanly after the screed has fully cured.

Depending on the substrate, edge insulation strips can be fixed using:
  • integrated self-adhesive backing
  • a stapler or nail gun
  • adhesive tape
A tight, gap-free connection to the wall is essential to prevent sound bridges.

Edge insulation strips are trimmed only after the screed has fully cured. Cutting them too early can result in sound bridges or cracking.

Material & Properties

Edge insulation strips are generally made of PE foam (polyethylene). The material is resilient, moisture-resistant, lightweight and ideal for acoustic decoupling.

Typical dimensions of edge insulation strips include:
  • Widths: 200–350 mm
  • Thicknesses: 8 or 20 mm
  • Lengths: 25–50 m per roll
Custom sizes may also be available depending on the manufacturer.

Yes. PE foam is recyclable. When disposed of as a single material type, it can be returned to the recycling stream
