What is Wood Chip Fleece?

AGRIplus Wood Chip Cover Fleece is a breathable, water-repellent protective membrane designed for biomass storage. Thanks to its specially treated surface, the fleece allows continuous air circulation while reliably diverting heavy rainfall.

Supplied in wide rolls, the fleece can be laid out quickly and efficiently, making it a cost-effective alternative to expensive warehouse storage.

Benefits of Wood Chip Fleece

AGRIplus wood chip cover fleece ensures optimum air exchange, allowing residual moisture within the biomass to escape naturally. At the same time, the specially treated surface prevents rain, snow, hail, and other external moisture from penetrating the storage pile.

Condensation is also minimised, as the breathable structure of the fleece lets excess vapour escape easily.

This results in:

• Higher dry matter content

Can Standard Plastic Film Be Used Instead of Wood Chip Fleece?

Unlike our AGRIplus protective wood chip fleece, common plastic covers, silage films, or tarpaulins have a completely sealed surface. As a result, residual moisture and condensation remain trapped underneath. With no ventilation, the biomass cannot breathe.

This inevitably leads to rot and a significant loss of quality when wood chips are stored for longer periods.

For this reason, you should never cover wood chips with standard plastic sheeting, silage film, tarpaulins, or woven covers.

Easy Handling - Simple Installation

Thanks to its open-pore surface and smooth, flexible texture, AGRIplus fleece is extremely easy to handle. Unlike heavy plastic sheets or tarpaulins, the fleece offers minimal wind resistance, making installation quick and simple.

Plastic films and covers often act like the sails of a boat in windy conditions, turning installation into a struggle. With AGRIplus fleece, this problem is eliminated.

How to Properly Install Wood Chip Fleece

To achieve the best results, AGRIplus protective fleece should be installed at a 45° angle, similar to a pitched roof. This ensures that rainwater can run off easily without forming puddles or water pockets on the biomass heap.

In practice, this 45° angle occurs naturally, since wood chips are always heaped into a mound. That means mistakes during installation are almost impossible.

How to Secure Wood Chip Protection Fleece

There are several effective methods for fixing the fleece in place, depending on the size of the cover and how much overhang you have available:

• Wide fleece roll with sufficient overhang
  Simply weigh down the edges with silo sandbags along the base of the heap.
• Narrow fleece roll with little overhang
  Use our reusable HOLDon eyelets or clips to secure the fleece in place. Alternatively, you can use fleece nails, which are driven through the material directly into the biomass.

Price-Performance Ratio and Product Comparison

A product with so many outstanding features must surely cost far more than standard plastic film?

Not at all. When you compare AGRIplus wood chip cover fleece with a strong woven tarpaulin (250 g/m²), the price difference per square metre is only a matter of a few cents.

Considering the long lifespan of AGRIplus fleece, the significantly better quality of stored wood chips, and the lower biomass losses, we can confidently say: The price–performance ratio could not be better.

That makes AGRIplus fleece the most cost-effective and economical solution for outdoor wood chip storage.

Durability of Wood Chip Fleece

Thanks to its special manufacturing process, AGRIplus fleece is exceptionally weather-resistant and UV-stable. It also offers outstanding puncture resistance and tear strength.

With a high weight of 200 g/m², AGRIplus fleece can withstand heavy stress – even when machinery is used around the storage site.

The biggest challenge for plastics outdoors is UV exposure. To counteract this, AGRIplus fleece is produced from polypropylene (PP) fibres enriched with UV stabilisers. This ensures a UV resistance of at least 5–7 years, even under tough European weather conditions.

Repairing Wood Chip Fleece

Should your fleece become damaged, we offer practical hook-and-loop repair bands for patching small tears and holes.

These repair tapes can also be used to securely connect multiple fleece sheets together, providing long-lasting protection for larger storage piles.
