What Is Weed Control Fabric and What Is It Made Of?
Weed control fabric is a durable, tear-resistant material made of polypropylene. It is lightproof but allows water, nutrients, and oxygen to pass through. In this way, it acts much like a thick layer of mulch, which is why it is sometimes referred to as mulch fabric.
It is widely used in landscaping and gardening to effectively suppress weed growth. By blocking out sunlight, the membrane prevents weeds from thriving and reaching the surface.
When planting, holes or cross-shaped cuts can be made in the fabric to allow your chosen plants to grow. The material is often hidden beneath turf, sandpits, patios, garden paths or gravel areas, providing a long-lasting solution to unwanted weed growth.
What Are the Benefits of Using Weed Control Membranes?
Weed control fabric provides two key benefits in the garden. Firstly, it suppresses weed growth by blocking out sunlight with its black, lightproof surface, depriving weeds of the energy they need to grow. Secondly, it helps to warm the soil beneath the fabric, creating a healthier growing environment for your flowers, vegetables, and shrubs.
By using weed suppressant fabric, you also save valuable time that would otherwise be spent weeding and maintaining flower beds, garden borders, and pathways. Instead, you can enjoy the summer months in your garden or focus fully on growing strong, healthy plants rather than constantly battling weeds.
Tip: In some cases, a few weeds may still appear despite using a weed control membrane. Later in this guide we explain why this can happen and how to fix it quickly and easily.
Where Can Weed Control Fabric Be Used?
Weed control fabric can be used anywhere weeds are a problem and you want to prevent their growth. It is popular with professional landscapers, horticultural businesses, farmers, allotment holders, and home gardeners.
Visible on the Soil Surface:
- Flower beds
- Vegetable beds and fruit plots
- Raised beds and cold frames
- Garden borders
- Slopes and embankments
- Greenhouses and polytunnels
- Allotments and smallholdings
Hidden Under Covering Materials
- Lawns (beneath turf or rolled lawn)
- Sandpits
- Bark mulch areas
- Patios and timber decking
- Paved driveways and garden paths
- Gravel and stone pathways
- Rockeries and gravel gardens
Weed suppressant fabric is extremely versatile, and the list of applications can be extended to many more areas in both gardens and landscaping projects.
What Is the Difference Between Weed Control Fabric and Garden Fleece?
Weed control fabric (also called weed membrane, ground cover fabric, or mulch fabric) prevents weeds from growing by blocking out sunlight. Garden fleece (horticultural fleece), on the other hand, allows light through and is used to protect young plants against frost and cold spring weather.
Garden fleece is usually applied in early spring as a frost protection fleece or crop fleece. Once the weather warms up, it is often replaced with a crop protection net to avoid overheating. However, both fleece and nets allow weeds to thrive. Only weed suppressant fabric effectively stops weed growth.
From a material perspective, weed membranes and garden fleece are both made from polypropylene fibres, but their function differs due to their colour and weave:
- Black weed control membrane: blocks out light, stops weed growth
- White or translucent horticultural fleece: lets in light, protects crops, but does not suppress weeds
Ideally, you can use both together: weed control fabric to suppress weeds and horticultural fleece (also known as early crop protection fleece) to promote stronger, faster plant growth during colder months.
What Thicknesses Are Available for Weed Control Fabric?
We supply our customers with two main thicknesses of weed control fabric: 50 g/m² and 100 g/m². Both are versatile and effective, but each has its own strengths and ideal areas of use. To make your choice easier, we have set out the key differences below.
50 g Weed Control Fabric
50 g weed control fabric is slightly less robust and less tear-resistant than heavier grades, and it allows a small amount more light to pass through. However, its big advantage is its high water permeability.
Because it is thinner, it is also more cost-effective and very easy to install thanks to its soft and flexible texture. This makes it ideal for shorter-term use on the surface of flower beds, vegetable plots, fruit growing areas, and agricultural land. In these situations, a high level of water penetration is essential so that young plants and seedlings can receive enough rain and irrigation water.
Despite being lightweight, it still offers good UV resistance for durability, and the black surface warms the soil, creating excellent growing conditions for a wide range of plants.
100 g Weed Control Fabric
In contrast, 100 g weed suppressant fabric is heavier, stronger, and more tear-resistant. Its higher opacity makes it more effective at blocking light and suppressing stubborn weeds. At the same time, it acts as a stronger barrier to moisture, slowing down water movement through the soil.
Thanks to these properties, 100 g weed control membranes are ideal for use under:
- Gravel and stone gardens
- Garden paths and walkways
- Bark mulch areas
- Driveways and landscaping projects
Its thickness makes it particularly effective as both a weed barrier and a root barrier, preventing weeds and invasive roots from breaking through the material.
Custom Strengths Available
For bulk orders, we can also produce special thicknesses of weed control fabric, including 150 g/m², 200 g/m², 250 g/m² and above. Width, length, and colour can also be customised. Please note that special orders require a minimum order quantity and slightly longer lead times.

How Long Does Suppressant Membrane Last?
Weed control fabric can be used for several growing seasons. Thanks to its high UV resistance, it only begins to break down after around 3–5 years when left exposed to sunlight.
When covered with soil, stones, bark mulch or decking, the lifespan can extend to 20 years or more.
Why Is Weed Control Fabric Black?
The lighter the colour of the material, the more light it lets through. The purpose of weed control fabric is specifically to block light, so that weeds cannot grow underneath it. For this reason, weed membranes are always black.
Using weed fabric in other colours would not be effective for weed suppression, even if it might look more decorative on garden or planting areas.
How to Install, Lay and Secure Weed Control Fabric
To ensure your weed control membrane works effectively, it is important to cut, install, and secure it correctly.
Cutting Weed Control Fabric
Weed suppressant fabric is very easy to cut and prepare, provided you have the right tools. Our membranes are available in widths from 0.80 m to 3.20 m. If the roll width does not match your area, you can simply overlap the fabric or cut it to size before laying.
For cutting, you can use a sharp pair of scissors or ideally a utility knife. To fix the fabric in place while laying, you will need:
- Ground pegs or plastic fixing nails (at least 10 cm long)
- Hammer
- Work gloves
- Measuring tape
Tip: If you prefer not to cut the fabric yourself, we can provide custom sizes on request.
Laying Weed Control Fabric
Since rolls are only available in limited widths, you will usually need to lay the fabric in several strips. Ensure generous overlaps of up to 50 cm to avoid gaps. It is also perfectly fine to use the material in multiple layers for extra strength.
During installation, secure or weigh down the fabric temporarily to prevent it from moving in the wind. You can use stones or other heavy objects for this, before final fixing with ground pegs.
Note: Weed control fabric has no top or bottom side. Both sides are identical, so it can be laid facing either way.
Securing Weed Control Fabric
To secure weed suppressant fabric permanently, use ground pegs or ground anchors. Simply hammer them through the fabric into the soil beneath. For stability, it is recommended to place a peg every 70–100 cm.
If you are using the fabric under patios, driveways, gravel paths, or decking, pegs are still necessary for initial fixing. While the stones, slabs, or mulch will weigh it down later, anchors are important during installation to keep the fabric in position.
For underground applications, fewer pegs may be required, but some fixing is still advisable to prevent shifting before covering.
What to Do If Weeds Grow Despite Using a Membrane
It can occasionally happen that weeds grow through the membrane or even on top of the membrane.
If weeds grow through the fabric:
This usually indicates very stubborn or deep-rooted weeds that are difficult to suppress with just one layer. In this case, you can add a second layer of weed control fabric, which should effectively prevent regrowth. Alternatively, it may mean the membrane has been damaged, and the affected section should be replaced.
If weeds grow on top of the fabric:
This usually happens when the membrane is used under gravel, bark mulch, or stone paths. If there is too little covering material, seeds can germinate and grow directly on the surface of the fabric. In this case, simply remove the weeds and add a thicker layer of gravel, bark, or mulch on top.
What Sizes Is Weed Control Fabric Available In?
Weed control membranes are available in a range of widths:
- 50 g/m² fabric: supplied in five widths from 0.80 m to 3.20 m, available in roll lengths of 25 m or 100 m.
- 100 g/m² fabric: supplied in three widths from 1.20 m to 3.20 m, available in standard rolls.
This allows you to choose the right roll size for your specific gardening or landscaping project.
Are There Alternatives to Using Weed Control Fabric?
Yes, instead of weed control fabric, you can also use woven ground cover fabric (woven weed membrane). This is a strong, tear-resistant material with the same weed suppression properties, but it is more commonly used for driveways, patios, paths, and rock gardens rather than beds or vegetable plots.
Another option sometimes mentioned is black plastic film. However, this material is not water-permeable, making it unsuitable for use in beds or growing areas where other plants need access to rain and irrigation water.
Horticultural fleece or simple garden netting, as explained earlier, are also not suitable for weed control, since they allow light through and do not block weed growth.
Among all available materials, weed control fabric remains the easiest to install, softest, and most flexible solution, making it ideal for both amateur gardeners and professionals.
