What is Garden Fleece and What is it Made Of?
Garden fleece (also known as horticultural fleece) is a lightweight, white, non-woven fabric made from polypropylene. It is soft, fine, and flexible, consisting of long fibres with varying thickness across the surface, technically referred to as grammage or surface weight.
Garden fleece allows light, air, and water to pass through while offering excellent UV resistance. Because it creates ideal growing conditions underneath, it is also known as crop cover or early-harvest fleece. Both terms refer to the same product.
Thicker garden fleece, which provides better protection against cold temperatures, is often called frost protection fleece. However, it should not be confused with weed control fabric. Weed membranes are black, block out light completely, and are used to prevent weed growth.
What Are the Benefits of Horticultural Fleece?
In short, garden fleece offers multiple benefits. In commercial horticulture, its main purposes are increasing yields, accelerating growth, and controlling harvest periods.
It also provides effective protection from environmental influences such as hail, wind, frost, and cold. Another significant advantage is the reduction of insect damage, no gardener wants to see their carefully grown lettuce destroyed by snails or pests.
When Should Garden Fleece Be Used?
Garden fleece is designed for use during the colder months. As sunlight intensity increases, the risk of heat build-up under the fleece also rises. On warmer days, it’s important to lift or ventilate the fleece to prevent overheating.
When temperatures remain consistently high, replace the fleece with a vegetable protection net. This prevents heat accumulation while maintaining excellent plant protection.
Where is Garden Fleece Commonly Applied?
For any grower, a harvest damaged by frost or pests is a nightmare, and so is losing time to competitors who can harvest earlier. Using garden fleece, early-harvest fleece, or frost protection fleece prevents this.
Crops such as lettuce, potatoes, cabbage, strawberries, and tomatoes can grow safely under the fleece, ensuring healthy plants and an earlier, more successful harvest.
For weed prevention in beds and paths, however, weed control fabric is the right choice.
Garden fleece is also widely used in nurseries and greenhouses to protect tender blooms and buds of developing plants.
In home gardens, it’s ideal for protecting flowerbeds, lawns, and vegetable patches from frost, insects, and adverse weather conditions. However, it is not suitable as a cover for garden furniture.
Regardless of where it’s used, remember that garden fleece is intended for cooler seasons only. As sunlight increases, so does the risk of overheating beneath the fleece. On warm days, air it out and replace it with a crop protection net (available in our online shop) to maintain plant safety without heat build-up.
Which Plants Benefit from Crop Protection Fleece?
Garden fleece is used for a wide range of frost-sensitive plants that require protection at the beginning of colder months. These include:
- Mediterranean plants
- Potted plants
- Evergreen trees and shrubs
The location of the plants is also important, whether they’re positioned in a sheltered area such as a south-facing wall, or exposed on the north or east side.
To protect plant crowns, stronger fleece materials of 30 g/m² or 60 g/m² are recommended.
How Do You Lay Garden Fleece Correctly?
Installing garden fleece is simple and straightforward. When ordering, make sure the material is wide and long enough to cover your growing area completely. Once you have sown or planted, carefully lay the fleece over the bed. Do not stretch it too tightly, your plants need enough room to grow upwards. Secure the fleece properly around the edges.
Which Side of Crop Cover Should Face Upwards?
With crop cover or early-harvest fleece, there is no top or bottom side, both sides can be used equally.
How to Secure Garden Fleece Properly?
You can easily secure garden fleece using ground pegs, anchor pins, or nails. It can also be weighed down with sandbags, heavy stones, or by burying the edges in the soil. Any fixing method works as long as the fleece remains stable and cannot easily be lifted by strong gusts of wind.
What Thickness of Garden Fleece Should I Use?
In most cases, garden fleece or crop cover with a thickness of 17-19 g/m² is sufficient to protect your plants. This lightweight material allows maximum light and water permeability, creating ideal growing conditions.
During colder months, consider using heavier garden fleece or frost protection fleece with a thickness of 30–60 g/m². These denser materials provide better insulation against cold, while still allowing air, water, and light to pass through.
Products with a higher grammage are clearly listed in our online shop as frost protection fleece.
Is Crop Protection Fleece Too Heavy for Plants?
No. When the fleece is laid loosely over seedlings and secured with stones or soil, it moves with the plants as they grow. It should never be stretched tightly, as this can damage the crops underneath.
During Which Months Should Fleece Be Applied?
Typically, garden fleece is used from February or March, as soon as you start sowing or planting. Its purpose is to provide optimal growing conditions even at lower temperatures.
From May onwards, when the sun becomes stronger and the first heat waves arrive, the fleece should be removed to avoid heat build-up.
Monitor temperatures carefully and lift or ventilate the fleece on warmer days. Even short periods of direct sunlight can cause significant heat accumulation under the material.
Can Garden Fleece Be Used All Summer?
No, during the warm summer months, garden fleece can cause excessive heat and humidity, increasing the risk of fungal diseases. It’s best to remove and clean the fleece during this time, and reapply it at the beginning of the cooler season.
Should I Ventilate Under the Fleece When It Gets Warm?
Partial ventilation is not effective. When the days become warmer, the fleece should be completely removed during the day. However, this means it no longer offers protection against pests. For continued protection, it’s recommended to replace the fleece with a vegetable protection net.
Does Garden Fleece Allow Water to Pass Through?
Yes, garden fleece must allow water to pass through, otherwise the soil underneath would dry out. Thanks to its air and water permeability, it creates an ideal microclimate for plant growth. It also prevents drying out, mould formation, and condensation under the cover.
Can I Use Plastic Instead of Fleece?
Traditional perforated film or greenhouse film has been largely replaced by garden fleece in both gardening and agriculture, and for good reason.
The non-woven surface of fleece allows only light and water to pass through, providing everything your plants need while keeping pests and insects out.
Plastic film, on the other hand, can only fulfil one function at a time:
- If it’s perforated to allow water through, pests can also enter.
- If it’s solid, it keeps insects out but prevents water penetration.
Additionally, heavy rain can cause water to weigh down the film, potentially crushing plants underneath.
For this reason, garden fleece is always the better and safer choice for plant protection.
Are There Alternatives to Horticultural Fleece?
Garden fleece is the only material you should truly rely on in gardening and agriculture. There are no real alternatives that offer the same level of protection against harsh spring weather while also creating a favourable growing environment free from insects and pests.
Garden fleece is also environmentally friendly, making it even more unique. When the weather improves, it should be replaced with a vegetable protection net. However, this net is not an alternative to garden fleece, it’s a different type of product designed for the warmer months.
Is Green Garden Fleece Better Than White?
Professional growers always use white garden fleece, and this is what you should choose as well. While green or coloured fleece might look more attractive in the garden, on the lawn, or in agricultural fields, it has a major disadvantage, as it allows less light to pass through and therefore reduces plant growth.
Coloured versions, often called decorative fleece, are suitable for visual purposes only, not for serious cultivation or crop protection.
That’s why all our garden fleece products are white, ensuring optimal light transmission and healthy plant development.
Does Crop Cover Help with Weeds?
No. Crop cover (early-harvest fleece) is designed to support plant growth, and it will do the same for weeds.
If you want to suppress weed growth, you’ll need black weed control fabric, which blocks almost all light and deprives weeds of their growing conditions.
Does Garden Fleece Protect Against Pests?
Yes. Garden fleece also protects your crops from insects, pests, birds, and even wild animals, acting as a natural barrier without the need for chemicals.
Can Crop Protection Fleece Be Washed?
Yes, garden fleece can be washed, just like regular clothing, at low temperatures. Polypropylene has a melting point of around 70–90°C, so always use a gentle wash cycle.
That said, washing is only practical for small quantities from home gardens. In commercial agriculture or nurseries, where large volumes are used, washing is generally not feasible.
What Colours Are Available?
Classic garden fleece is white, and for good reason, white fleece provides optimal light permeability. Coloured fleece does not let as much light through, which limits plant growth, so white remains the professional standard.
What Dimensions Are Frost Protection Fleeces Available In?
We offer a wide range of standard sizes available from stock, suitable for both home gardeners and professional growers. (Contact us or view the size options listed in our online shop for full availability.)

What Common Problems Occur and How Can They Be Solved?
If you’re using garden fleece for the first time, you might experience one of the following three common issues. Don’t worry, these are normal and have simple explanations.
Sometimes your garden fleece may initially allow little or no water through, or the area beneath it may become too warm.
If no water passes through at first, this is usually due to a thin protective coating that remains on the fabric from production. After a few days of outdoor exposure, this coating dissolves naturally, and the fleece becomes fully water-permeable.
If only small amounts of water reach the plants, you may have installed fleece with too high a grammage. Only 17–19 g/m² garden fleece allows optimal light and water permeability. Thicker fleece, such as frost protection fleece, is designed mainly to insulate against cold rather than to let water pass through easily.
If it becomes too warm under the fleece due to heat build-up, that’s completely normal. On warm days, lift or open the fleece to allow air circulation, and remove it entirely as the weather gets warmer.
If you encounter other issues with your garden fleece, crop cover, or frost protection fleece, simply give us a call, our experts will be happy to advise you on a solution.
Can Garden Fleece Be Reused Next Year?
Yes, if handled carefully and stored properly, crop cover (early-harvest fleece) can be reused for two to three seasons. Ideally, store it in a dark or low-light environment, as constant UV exposure, even on UV-stabilised fleece, will gradually degrade polypropylene over time.
When Should Garden Fleece Be Replaced?
If treated gently and stored correctly when not in use, crop cover fleece can be used for two to three growing seasons.
It should be kept in a dark, dry, and lightproof area to prevent UV damage. Even though the material is UV-stabilised, prolonged sunlight exposure will eventually start the decomposition process of polypropylene.
How to Store Garden Fleece
Before storage, make sure your garden fleece is clean and completely dry. Storing it while damp can cause unpleasant odours and mould growth.
You can hang the fleece on a washing line to air-dry, and once dry, store it until the next use.
How Should Old Frost Protection Fleece Be Disposed Of?
Garden fleece is made from polypropylene, an eco-friendly and recyclable material. Disposal is simple, no special measures are required.
Over time, when exposed to UV light, polypropylene naturally breaks down into its basic components of carbon and hydrogen. Small quantities from home gardens can be safely disposed of in the household plastic recycling bin.
