Woodchip piles naturally form this angle when heaped, making errors in handling nearly impossible. Compost heaps should be formed at a 45° angle for best results. Tip 2: For wider fleece, weigh it down at the edges using silage sandbags. For narrower fleece, use our practical HOLDon eyelets or clips. Alternatively, fleece pegs can be used to secure the fleece effectively.

What is Compost Fleece?
Compost protection fleece is a highly tear-resistant and durable fabric-like material. It is manufactured from polypropylene (PP) fibres and offers the unique advantage of being both water-repellent and breathable.
Our compost covers are supplied in rolls of 4 x 50 m, 5 x 50 m, and 6 x 50 m. For hobby gardeners and smaller-scale use, we also offer cut-to-size pieces in smaller quantities.
Purpose of Compost Protection Fleece
When a compost heap is covered, garden and organic waste heats up much more quickly, resulting in faster and more efficient composting. AGRIplus fleece provides excellent insulation, retaining heat within the compost while still allowing essential air and moisture exchange. This ensures the ideal conditions for effective decomposition.
AGRIplus compost covers also prevent the surface from drying out due to wind and extreme heat. In addition, they reduce unpleasant odours around the compost pile which is a major advantage for private gardens. Mature compost is also protected from external contamination such as weed growth and airborne seeds.

Using Compost Cover Fleece in Winter

Using a compost fleece helps maintain the ideal moisture balance and provides excellent winter protection.
Tips for Different Stages of Compost Maturity
Fresh Compost Material
If your biomass is still quite fresh, a winter cover is beneficial but not as critical as for more developed compost.
Semi-Mature Compost
Semi-mature compost, however, should always be covered in winter. You can recognise it by its higher moisture content. To check the condition of your compost, take a handful and press it firmly. If water escapes, your compost is most likely in a semi-mature state. In this case, cover it with fleece in winter to improve biomass quality and prevent excess moisture.
Mature Compost
Mature biomass, or mature compost, must always be well protected against rainfall and excess moisture. Otherwise, valuable nutrients may be washed out and lost.
Covering Compost with Plastic Film
Never cover your compost heap long-term with waterproof plastic film, tarpaulins or woven covers. An airtight plastic cover prevents oxygen circulation and leads to rotting instead of proper composting.
Temporary use of plastic film during extreme weather (heavy rain, snow, hail) can be helpful. However, this is unnecessary if you choose AGRIplus compost fleece. AGRIplus fleece can remain on the compost heap all year round, there is no need to remove and reapply it. This saves you time, reduces labour costs, and ensures significantly better composting results.

AGRIplus compost protection fleece has a robust density of 200 g/m². This high weight not only provides excellent water permeability and breathability but also ensures outstanding tear resistance and long durability.
Tests with thinner fleeces (such as straw fleece, hay fleece or mulch fleece) have shown significantly poorer results compared with the proven AGRIplus compost fleece at 200 g/m².

How do I cover compost properly?
Cut the fleece to the required size using a knife, cutter or scissors (if not already cut) and lay it evenly over the compost heap. In windy locations, we recommend securing the fleece. Our reusable eyelets are ideal for this purpose.
Should I cover finished compost?
Yes. Even finished compost heaps are covered with AGRIplus fleece. The reasons are clear: protection from heavy rainfall, prevention of nutrient leaching, and shielding the humus from weeds, seeds and other contamination.
