What is underlay film?

Underlay film is a very thin standard PE film (PE = polyethylene). It is supplied in rolls and is always folded several times to make handling easier.

What is underlay film used for?

Underlay film is used in agriculture for bunker silos. It serves as an additional protective layer or protective film under the well-known silage film. It provides additional high level of safety, optimal airtightness and thus optimal silage and feed quality.

Underlay film prevents water and oxygen from penetrating the silage if the upper layers, such as silage film and silo protection grids, are damaged.

What does underlay film cost?

Underlay film is a simple and inexpensive solution with a very high impact. Since underlay film does not need to be UV-resistant (as it is placed under the silo film and silo protection grid) and does not need to be very thick, the price is negligible compared to silo film and silo grid.

Underlay film costs less than a 10th of the other covering materials (silo film and silo protection grid). Due to its many benefits and low price, underlay film is an essential item for every silo.

What qualities and thicknesses of underlay film are there?

Standard underlay film is usually made of 40-my film. 40 my corresponds to 0.040 mm. The weight per 100 sqm is approximately 3.5 to 3.7 kg. This rather thin film thickness is absolutely sufficient and has a decisive advantage. Due to its elasticity, the film is very supple and thus adapts ideally to the silage or feed stock. It literally absorbs the wet and moist feed through the aforementioned properties. This is why underlay film is also known as suction film. You will therefore be unlikely to find underlay films with a higher film thickness on the market.

What dimensions are available?

Of course, we fulfil all customer requests, just as we do with silage film. Underlay film is available in widths of 4 to 20 m. Typical roll lengths are 50 m, 100 m, 300 m and sometimes 400 m.

What colours are available?

The colour of the underlay film is irrelevant. As a rule, underlay films are manufactured in transparent or translucent, as coloured granules make films unnecessarily expensive.

Of course, there are suppliers who offer underlay films in different colours, but this has no advantages in terms of quality or handling. We therefore insist on transparent underlay films, as we are aware that there is a high level of competition and economic pressure in the agricultural sector.

Is underlay film UV resistant?

Underlay films do not have to be UV-resistant, as they are used under the silo film and the silo protection grid so they are not exposed to the sun and UV radiation.

Combination film - silage film with underlay film

So-called combi-silo films have been available for several years. These are silo films that already have the underlay film integrated on the roll. This saves you time and effort when laying the film. How do we package and fold our underlay film?

Roll packaging

Each roll is individually packed in a very sturdy PE film so that the product arrives at the customer undamaged. In addition, the product can be stored outside for a certain period of time thanks to the excellent packaging.

Folding

All underlay films are folded (multiple times) to simplify handling and transport. The rolls are folded to a width of approx. 750 to 2500 mm, depending on the film width.

Pallet packaging

Larger quantities are also packed generously with protective film and are delivered on Euro or disposable pallets. Depending on the dimensions, there are usually between 25 and 60 rolls on a pallet.

Is underlay film environmentally friendly?

The environmental compatibility of underlayer film is outstanding. Underlayer film is made of pure polyethylene (lDPE). Polyethylene is a by-product of petroleum and consists of pure carbon and hydrogen. It can easily be recycled an infinite number of times with only carbon dioxide and water being produced during incineration. PE does not contain any toxic substances such as plasticisers or heavy metals.
