What is mantle film / net replacement film?
Mantle film or net replacement film is a replacement product for round bale nets, which are used in the agricultural sector. In contrast to round bale netting, mantle film has a closed surface. Mantle film is used to wrap pressed round bales and keep them in shape. Mantle film is mainly used for round bales with grass silage or maize silage.
What material is mantle film made of?
Mantle film is made from the environmentally friendly and widely used polyethylene (LDPE). As mantle film must have a very high load-bearing capacity and puncture resistance, only particularly high-quality octene and LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) raw materials are used here. Mantle film is supplied in rolls with high running metre quantities on stable (cardboard) cores.
Can mantle film be used on every round baler?
No. Either your baler needs to be upgraded with a conversion kit - the cost is around 5,000 EUR to 8,000 EUR depending on the model - or your (new) baler already has the feeder installed in it as standard. We recommend to have a telephone consultation with us in order to discuss whether mantle film can be used on your existing round baler. If you are in doubt, we can send you individual rolls as samples (subject to a charge, at special conditions). This will allow you to test the film at your leisure, ensuring that everything works smoothly on a day-to-day basis, which is an important factor in the often hectic agricultural season. Which baler manufacturers produce mantle film?
A large number of manufacturers are involved in the production of mantle film: Krone, Göweil, Pöttinger, John Deere, Claas, McHale, Orkel, Kuhn, Case New Holland.
How many bales can be wrapped with one roll of film?
Depending on the number of wraps, approx. 100 - 130/140 round bales can be produced with one roll of wrapping film (approx. 1650 m each). About 120 bales can be achieved with 3 wraps and about 100 bales with 4 wraps. The pre-stretching of the wrapping film should be approx. 30 - 35%.
What is the thickness of mantle film?
Mantle film is available in a wide range of film thicknesses. A distinction is also made between "standard films" and "pre-stretched" films. With our patented Unterland Compact Coveris film, you avoid the problems that often occur with most pre-stretched films. It is therefore clearly the best net replacement film for round bale silage, regardless of whether it is grass silage, maize silage or beet pulp. Higher tear resistance in the longitudinal direction is achieved with pre-stretched mantle film. Although pre-stretched mantle films reduce the so-called constriction and improve the coverage of the bale edges, they also often lead to splitting in the longitudinal direction. Coarse silage mass can very easily lead to holes forming and the film bursting open during transport and storage. For this reason, we recommend that you use unstretched film with a film thickness of 15 µ or higher when purchasing mantle film.
What dimensions are available?
Mantle films are usually offered in film widths from 1.28 m to 1.40 m. The wider the film, the more the film covers the shoulders of the silage bales. Depending on the film thickness, lengths of 1500 m to 2200 m are commonly used.
What colour does mantle film have?
As a rule, mantle films are white.
Is mantle film UV-resistant?
Mantle film is not UV-resistant. Silage bales that have been wrapped with mantle film are usually wrapped with wrapping film immediately after use. In this case, the UV resistance of the mantle film is not necessary and it would increase the price needlessly.
Advantages of mantle film
- A significantly higher oxygen barrier, better protection and better quality of your silage. (Recommended with a standard 6-layer wrap of stretch film)
- Mantle film provides more protection for the bale where it is most vulnerable, particularly on the mantle side.
- Bales that have been processed with mantle film are significantly less sensitive to slight damage, resulting in less feed loss.
- The round bales are more stable in shape, have a higher density and the bales look uniform as no waves form on the edge. This means that bales pressed with wrapping film can be wrapped more easily, quickly and smoothly.
- Significantly easier and less problematic handling, as the bales are less sensitive and more stable.
- In freezing conditions, the mantle film can be separated from the silage more easily than wrapping net, which often freezes onto and into the silage.
- Using net replacement film prevents residual pieces of net in the bale, which can jeopardise the health of your animals.
- The use of wrapping film and our mantle film eliminates the need for time-consuming waste separation during disposal. Thanks to the standardised material of the Unterland Compact net replacement film and the wrapping film, they can be disposed of and recycled together. This saves time and protects the environment.
Where is mantle film used?
- Grass: Bales of grass silage are now very frequently wrapped in mantle film.
- Maize: Net replacement film is often used for maize bales / maize silage.
- Beet pulp: Beet pulp is being wrapped with our mantle film as well.
Which brands of mantle film can you order from us?
- Coveris / Unterland
- Silawrap (we often also have high-quality Silawrap mantle film in stock for you)
Price comparison of mantle film and round bale net
At first glance, mantle film appears somewhat more expensive than round bale netting. However, if you consider all the advantages of mantle film, it quickly becomes clear that the slightly higher price is offset by better feed quality, less feed loss, better and easier handling.
What is the minimum quantity of mantle film you can buy?
We are known for our great flexibility and excellent customer service. We deliver quickly and reliably directly to your home from just one roll of film.
