What is a grid film?

A grid film is a film that has a grid running through it to ensure additional stability. Grid film is mainly used in the garden for greenhouses or in the construction sector. Additional UV stabilisers are incorporated into the grid film for outdoor use.

What do I need to consider when buying grid film?

Grid film for a greenhouse should always be UV-stabilised and weather-resistant. Considering the effort involved in applying and processing the film, it definitely makes sense to opt for a grid film with a long shelf life to save time and money, even if the purchase costs are correspondingly higher.

The tear strength, tear resistance and durability of garden grid film is perfectly sufficient in the vast majority of cases, as hobby gardeners usually build smaller greenhouses. Grid film is therefore almost always sufficiently tear-resistant, as long as it has been correctly and professionally attached. If this is the case, it can even withstand strong winds, storms and hail.

Of course, grid films are highly stable, waterproof for the garden and temperature-resistant, both cold-resistant (frost-proof, frost-resistant) and heat-resistant. The temperature resistance of polyethylene films is approx. -70°C to +70°C.

What is a nailed edge on grid film?

Most grid films are manufactured with a nailed edge on the long sides, which makes attaching and fastening the film easier, more durable and more stable. A nailed edge is a very strong fabric with a width of approx. 5 cm, which, as mentioned above, is incorporated into the long sides of the grid film.

When buying film by the metre, you will always have the described nailed edge on the long sides. There is therefore no nail edge on the cut edge. Finished tarpaulins made of grid film have a so-called nail edge or eyelet tape all around.

UV resistance of the grid film

Most grid films are UV-resistant or UV-stable for approx. 3 years. Make sure that the supplier offers an UV guarantee. Statements such as "approx. 3 years UV-resistant" will of course not help in the case of a problem.

As grid films are very often used as greenhouse films, UV resistance is very relevant. Durability in UV light also plays a decisive role for tarpaulins used outdoors.

Grid film with or without eyelets

Grid films on rolls are basically without eyelets. They are generally easier to attach to the greenhouse without eyelets. Attaching them at certain spots is more of a disadvantage and can cause the eyelets to tear out in wind and bad weather.

Fastening grid film

If the film is used as greenhouse film, a full-surface attachment with roof battens or metal rails is much stronger and more secure. To ensure that you can use the film for as long as possible, correct fastening is one of the key points. The durability is directly related to this.

Connecting grid film

If you need to join two sheets of film, we recommend overlapping the film and screwing it tightly together with a so-called counter-batten. A counter-batten means nothing more than clamping the film between two wooden battens or metal rails and screwing these battens firmly together.

Special UV-resistant adhesive tapes or repair tapes are available for simple connections as well.

Our experience and tests have shown that all other attempts to join grid film by welding, sewing, stapling or liquid bonding fail in almost 100% of all cases.

A professional welding machine is required to weld grid film. Liquid adhesives do not work at all with grid film or PE film, even superglues with extreme adhesive strength fail with grid film. Sewing and stapling is very unsafe, as the grid film is at risk of tearing under high loads.

If you need a width greater than 4 metres, a ready-made cover tarpaulin with grid reinforcement may be a very good alternative.

Repairing grid film

To repair minor damage, holes or tears, we offer a very high-quality, self-adhesive and UV-resistant repair tape. It is extremely easy to use. We recommend applying the adhesive for grid films / greenhouse films / fabric tarpaulins / cover tarpaulins from both sides and cleaning the grid film with soapy water beforehand so that the repair tape adheres securely.

Colour of the grid film

Of course, a garden film used as greenhouse film must first and foremost be transparent and translucent so that the plants are provided with sufficient light and sun. Clearly, grid films have a disadvantage here compared to professional greenhouse film (UV5), as the processed fabric shades light and sun accordingly. The grid film is transparent between the grid.

The colour of the grid reinforcement, whether green, white or blue, does not play a decisive role here. Light transmission is always a slight or even decisive disadvantage with grid film. We have grid films available in green and white.

Our tip, if you consider it necessary, is to work with grid film on the front sides of the greenhouse. For the roof area, we recommend a clear, highly transparent greenhouse film, which professional gardeners use as well.

Widths, lengths, whole rolls or rolls per metre

There are usually four different widths of green grid film on the market. These are usually 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 metres. You can also order 6 metre wide grid film from us. The length of the grid film is freely selectable at dm-folien. You have the choice between a finished cut to size in the above-mentioned widths with a freely selectable length (from 1m to 10 m), or rolls (25 / 50 m). We can also cut the desired length for you from the rolls (running metre items). Please note that the nail edge is then only present on the long side!

We also stock a number of ready-made, white grid tarpaulins in a variety of sizes, such as 3 x 4 m, 4 x 5 m, 4 x 6 m, 4 x 8 m, 5 x 6 m, 6 x 8 m and 6 x 10 m. If you cannot find the right size despite this huge variety, we can produce every tarpaulin or film exactly to your specifications. You decide how wide and long the tarpaulin should be.
