What is a construction film?
By definition, a construction film is a versatile cover film that is primarily used in the construction industry. It is available in many different widths, lengths and thicknesses and is produced folded several times on rolls.
What material is a construction film made of and what properties does it have?
A construction film consists of one hundred per cent polyethylene, an environmentally friendly film material. The cover film is always made from regenerated and recycled material. As a result, it usually takes on a translucent, slightly grey, black or even coloured colour. It is generally waterproof, but only partially weatherproof and light-resistant. It is therefore only intended for short-term outdoor use. If you need a longer-lasting cover film for outdoor use, you can of course also find it here in our shop and in our stock range. In addition to the previous properties, a construction film - depending on its thickness and despite its low weight - is extremely tear-resistant, stretchable and durable.
Where is construction film normally used?
Construction film is mainly used in construction, drywall construction and interior design. Companies use them to cover pits, surfaces and building materials to provide efficient and affordable moisture protection and weather protection. Moisture is one of the natural enemies on construction sites, as it can cause extensive damage and jeopardise the strict cost plan. In addition to construction sites, construction film can also be used as a moisture barrier under concrete, floor slabs, underfloor heating or as screed film and various floor coverings. It can also be used to seal windows and as dust protection walls and as a protective cover for floors, walls, furniture and window sills. Processing the film is very simple and can be realised without the use of many tools.
Is construction film also suitable as a "vapour barrier"?
Vapour barriers are often used in the construction, interior finishing and renovation of properties. These are thick layers of film that act as a moisture barrier for insulation material in roofs and walls. They can also be referred to synonymously as vapour retarder film or vapour barrier film. Our professionals do not recommend using construction film for this purpose. On the one hand this is for fire protection reasons, and on the other side because of the material of the construction film. The film used as a vapour barrier should have the highest possible density, which ordinary construction films cannot fully provide due to their raw materials. The film should also be as flame-retardant as possible. Ideally, it should be a B1 film, which is required for public buildings, for example. Depending on the regulations, B2 or B3 vapour barrier films are also conceivable. Generally, films with a thickness of at least 200 my should be used.
What dimensions and thicknesses of construction film are available from us?
When we talk about the dimensions and thicknesses of a construction film, we generally refer to the three dimensions: width, length and film thickness. We offer products in many different dimensions.
Width
As standard, we offer films that are 2 m to 6 m wide. If this is too wide or not wide enough for you, please contact us. This is because a construction film can also be produced in smaller or larger widths without any problems. For example, with a width of one metre or even ten metres. Construction film is normally supplied folded several times to reduce the width of the roll. Of course, we can also produce unfolded construction film for you.
Length
We supply construction film from stock on 50 metre rolls as standard. However, other lengths can of course also be realised here. Whether as jumbo rolls of several hundred metres or as small rolls from ten metres - all wishes can be realised. Please note that we are unable to supply rolls by the metre. However, we do offer a large selection of other films in our shop, which you can order cut to length by the metre.
Examples for the core diameter of the construction films
- 38 mm
- 50 mm
- 76 mm
Thickness (Type)
Beware of the trap!
On the market, we almost always come across type designations and/or "my" thicknesses for construction film. Categorizing products by type is meaningless and "my" values are wrong in almost 100% of cases.
Type designations are designed to conceal the actual film thickness. The next "uncertainty" is the core / sleeve. It is common for suppliers to specify the roll weight, including the core. How heavy is the core and how much film does the customer lose?
Examples of types (replacement for a thickness specification)
- Type 50
- Type 100
- Type 120
- Type 150
- Type 200
Of course, the customer should believe that type 120, for example, corresponds to a film thickness of 120 my.
Example for "my" specifications
- 50 my
- 80 my
- 100 my
- 120 my
- 150 my
- 200 my
Roll weight is often indicated on labels. These roll weights also vary significantly in some cases. They always include the core. The heavier the core, the less film the customer receives and the cheaper the film can be offered, as a core is somewhat cheaper overall than the film itself. If you are in any doubt, let us advise you free of charge. We will resolve the uncertain issues and help you to keep track of things.
If you require larger quantities or are interested in this topic, we will be happy to advise you on film thicknesses and common "cheating methods" on the market. This topic is very important for the customer, as a lot of money can be saved here. Our motto is "honesty is the best policy" ... If you are in any doubt, let us advise you free of charge.
What are the differences between different coloured construction films?
Construction film is generally available in different colours, both in transparent and translucent as well as opaque or coloured. However, this is not because the films are deliberately coloured, but because the films are made from different recycled raw materials. Either from new and high-quality raw materials or from those obtained through previous recycling processes.
Transparent construction film has the highest quality and is also the most expensive of all. It is manufactured exclusively from new, high-quality raw materials. You can see through it clearly and benefit from its high tear resistance and smooth surface. To a certain extent, transparent construction film is not the same as typical construction film. A certain amount of recycled material is always used in the production of construction film. In terms of price, it is in the middle between transparent and opaque or colourful films and has a greyish colour with limited transparency. This means that it is not 100 per cent clear, but you can still read a newspaper under the film.
Opaque or coloured films are made from a colourful mix of regenerated and recycled materials. In the end, they are usually black, grey or green and usually completely opaque. As they can also give off a slight odour, these films are not of the highest quality. However, they are the cheapest films for construction, interior work, renovation and all other areas of application and they fulfil their purpose.
They cannot be compared with specifically and individually coloured films. These are made from 1A quality raw materials. If you would like to order an individually coloured film as a custom-made product, please contact us. We can realise any colour request and any design, be it in red, yellow, blue or many other colours as well as opaque, light-proof, opaque and much more.
The UV resistance of our construction films is approx. 3 months.
How do I apply construction film correctly?
Construction film is versatile and very easy to work with, even without extensive tools. Unroll the appropriate amount of film and unfold it. Then cut it as you wish using a film cutter, cutter or standard scissors. Connect individual lengths of film together using standard adhesive tape. You should not use liquid adhesive as it does not work with polyethylene. Alternatively, you can also connect film strips together by welding. Use welding equipment or alternatively a stapler to attach the construction film to its substrate. Especially outdoors, it should be strong and stable enough to withstand gusts of wind without any problems.
How is the weight of the construction film calculated?
In order to check your product correctly, it is useful to be able to make a theoretical calculation of the roll weight. Here is an example:
You would like to purchase a roll of film with the dimensions of 4 x 50 m, 200 µ. You can calculate the weight as follows:
Width x length x thickness x specific weight (0.92) = weight per roll
4 x 50 x 0.2 x 0.92 = 36.8 kg per roll (without core / sleeve).
You can use this information to confront any seller of construction film to show that you have familiarised yourself with the topic of construction film and its base weight calculations. This way you can be sure that you are not buying a film that is too thin. You will also avoid overpricing.
Is construction film environmentally friendly?
In terms of environmental protection and ecology, construction tarpaulins are a pioneer, as they are made from material that has already been recycled. It can also be recycled an infinite number of times and processed into other plastic products. It is therefore no coincidence that construction films are also known as "eco-films". Even the recycling process does not generate any environmentally harmful vapours or other emissions. As polyethylene consists of pure carbon and hydrogen, it burns residue-free into carbon dioxide and water. Nowadays, high prices are paid for polyethylene recycling material. The motivation to dispose of / recycle film correctly is therefore very high. Incidentally, dm-folien itself always acts in an environmentally conscious and exemplary manner. We collect and sort our PE packaging waste and production waste and recycle almost 100% of it.
Can I get a data sheet for our construction films?
Of course, you can request a detailed data sheet on our various construction films. If you require information on specific values, we will be happy to assist you.
What is the customs tariff number for construction film?
The customs tariff number for construction films is 39201025.
