What is ESD bubble wrap?
Bubble film is a flexible, soft film with many individual air bubbles (nubs) on one side (2-layer) or between two film layers (3-layer). These closely spaced air bubbles provide impact protection. The film is often used to package sensitive, fragile products for transport and storage. The antistatic or "ESD" feature protects electronic components and devices from static discharge, which can damage the packaged items.
What does the abbreviation ESD stand for?
The abbreviation ESD stands for electrostatic discharge. ESD occurs, for example, when two different materials rub against each other. When the materials are separated, an electrostatic charge is created. For example, lightning flashes are electrostatic discharges. If you rub a balloon against your hair or a sweater made of synthetic materials, an electrostatic charge will also be created.
The smallest electrostatic charges, which you cannot feel physically, can severely damage sensitive electronic components or even destroy them completely.
What material is ESD bubble wrap made of?
The film is made of 100% low-density polyethylene. LDPE is the abbreviation for low-density polyethylene.
What is ESD bubble wrap used for?
ESD or antistatic bubble film is used to protect electronic parts from electrostatic discharge and to protect them. A special additive, which is added to the film during production, reduces its surface resistance so that any electrical voltage that arises can be dissipated in the bubble wrap. A positive side effect is that the film cannot become electrostatically charged and therefore does not stick to hands and clothing.
Typical applications: smartphones, tablets, computer chips, small electronic parts, batteries, electronic circuit boards, sensitive electronic measuring devices, and packaging lines with tight schedules.
What is the surface resistance of antistatic ESD bubble wrap?
The surface resistance of antistatic bubble film is 10⁹– 10¹¹ Ohm.
How long does the antistatic agent last?
Please note that the antistatic agent used for this film is not permanent. If surface resistance is important to you, check it regularly to avoid product damage.
How is ESD bubble wrap made?
The film is manufactured using so-called extruders. To put it simply, solid granules are melted down to form a viscous mass. To produce an antistatic version, antistatic granules (masterbatch) are also melted in. A flat film is produced during the manufacturing process. The air pillows are formed by deep drawing and connected to another flat film. To produce a three-layer ESD bubble film, a third layer of film is applied to the other side of the bubble wrap.
Why is ESD bubble wrap coloured pink or purple?
ESD bubble film is only available in pink or rose so that it can be distinguished from normal, non-antistatic films. The colouring is intended to prevent the accidental use of normal bubble film and the possible damage to electronic components that may result. The colouring is therefore a purely visual marking.

Can ESD film be welded?
Yes, polyethylene is a thermoplastic material that can easily be welded. You can weld this film with a standard impulse welding machine.
