What is a vacuum bag?
A vacuum bag (also known as sealed edge bag) is a flat bag made of plastic or synthetic material (PE/PA). It is usually sealed on its three closed sides with a wide seal seam (sealed seam bags) and opened on one side for filling or bottling. The wide seal seam ensures greater security when vacuum-sealing.
What is the difference between a vacuum bag and a normal packaging bag?
Vacuum bags in contrast to normal packaging bags, are always made from airtight composite materials (usually PA/PE). Packaging bags are made from monofilms (mainly polyethylene). Polyethylene as a monofilm is only partially permeable to air. A short-term vacuum is possible, but the vacuum is lost after a few hours or days, depending on the thickness of the film. With vacuum bags, the vacuum lasts for months and years due to the air-impermeable barrier films.
What is the main purpose of a vacuum bag?
Vacuum bags are mostly used to delay the spoilage of food and to make the transport of the goods easier. The complete removal of oxygen during the vacuum sealing process using a vacuum sealer slows down the decomposition process of the contents enormously, as the barrier film is completely impermeable to air. Vacuum bags can also be used universally as freezer bags to significantly extend the shelf life.
Vacuum film bags are used in industry, catering business, butchers, slaughterhouses, smokehouses, fish farming, fishing, dairies, agricultural operations, horticulture, catering, canteens, commercial kitchens, restaurants on wheels and in private households.
Sous-Vide cooking technique has also found its way into many kitchens in recent years. With this cooking method, the products are vacuum-sealed in a sealed bag - often together with a few herbs, spices and oil - and then cooked in a water bath at quite low temperatures. Thanks to Sous-vide, i.e. "under vacuum", the food does not lose any liquid and is usually as tender as butter with full flavour. Of course, we also have the right bags for sous-vide.
Sealed edge bags are also used to seal banknotes, coins, stamps, documents, high-quality collectibles, pictures and paintings, and many other products.
Which vacuum bag is suitable for which device?
The correct use of vacuum bags (so-called sealed edge bags) from dm-folien depends on the device. The appropriate vacuum bag is used depending on the type of device. A distinction is made between a chamber vacuum sealer and an external vacuum sealer. The chamber vacuum sealer requires vacuum bags with a smooth surface. In most cases, these are professional or industrial devices. As the name "chamber" suggests, the vacuum bags and their contents are placed in a chamber from which the air is then drawn out and the bag is sealed.
The external vacuum sealer is more commonly used in the household sector, but some businesses also use this type of device. An external vacuum sealer usually requires so-called "corrugated" vacuum bags. These are bags with a grooved inner surface through which the vacuum can be "drawn" completely through air channels without bubbles forming.
Please note: We have been told by our customers that smooth bags can also be used in an external vacuum sealer, but a special insertion technique must be used. We therefore recommend using smooth vacuum bags for chamber devices and corrugated bags for external vacuum sealers!
Misuse of vacuum bags
For some time now, vacuum bags have also been used to vacuum pack clothes and bed linen. However, unlike food packaging, the purpose of this process is not to extend the shelf life. The following benefits explain this idea.
Clothing: clothing is well protected from moisture and dirt when travelling. This is especially useful when travelling to very humid countries, on boat trips, sailing trips, adventure holidays, rallies, safari and so on. Vacuum bags are ideal for storing items of clothing as well. You can save up to 70-75% space by removing excess air.
Bed linen and mattresses: vacuuming mattresses for a short time destroys mites and mite eggs. However, this method does not involve using a special vacuum bag or vacuum sack, but rather a "normal" film sack made of pure polyethylene. The vacuum is only applied for around five to six minutes. This is usually done with a hoover, which permanently sucks out the air and thus ensures a short-term vacuum. Then simply vacuum the mattress thoroughly to remove the destroyed mite eggs - done. Allergy sufferers in particular carry out this procedure twice a year to get their house dust allergy under control.
Standard versions of our vacuum bags
Our sealed edge bags from the standard range are made from a coextruded, smooth barrier layer PA/PE film. This variant is the most widely used on the global market and can be used universally for all types of food.

All vacuum bags can be welded on standard vacuum welders and hand vacuum sealers. For private use, corrugated films (with textured surface) are often offered. As we focus more on the industrial sector, we do not currently stock these special bags with a textured surface.
Are plastic vacuum bags toxic or harmful?
Of course not. All films used are absolutely food-safe and completely harmless to people. The film contains neither plasticisers nor heavy metals or other hazardous substances. We will of course send you a food safety certificate on request.

Thickness and quality of the vacuum bags
Vacuum bags are usually produced in thicknesses of 90 and 150 my (µ). The bags consist of a co-extruded barrier film with 20 my PA (polyamide) and 70 my PE (polyethylene). We also have 170 my vacuum bags in our standard range in stock.
But you can also choose the thickness you want. We can realise any thickness between 50 my (0.05 mm) and 200 my (0.20 mm) for you. Contact us now.

Packaging of our vacuum bags
All sizes are packed in sturdy cardboard boxes, usually containing 1000 pieces. The vacuum bags are also bundled in packs of 100. For reasons of hygiene and food regulations, all cartons are lined with an inliner bag so that the vacuum bags do not come into direct contact with the carton. The individual 100-piece bundles are each packed in a PE bag.
