What are multi-layer shipping bags?

The most significant feature of a Coex mailing bag is already in its name. Coex stands for "coextrusion" and refers to a process in which liquefied plastic granulate is brought together by at least two extruders to form a common tube or film. The coextruded film or coextruded tubular film has different properties on both sides, which are explained in more detail in the section "Versions of coextruded shipping bags".

The granulate used here consists of a plastic called LDPE or PE (abbreviation for low-density polyethylene or polyethylene). The standard film shipping bag is produced from a single multi-layer, which some also call duplex. Theoretically, many more layers are possible. Coex mailing bags are mainly used in textile shipping. Multi-layer films are very tear-resistant and also opaque. Basically, a coex mailing bag is an opaque flat bag with a so-called adhesive seal bag with a safety closure. These mailing bags are particularly suitable as a replacement for cardboard boxes.

What does Coex mean?

Coex is short for "co-extruded" and means that the co-extruded film consists of several layers of film with different properties. The film layers are brought together via several extruder heads to form a composite film. For example, the film layer on the outside can be white, while the film layer on the inside is black.

What are the benefits of using film bags?

For a long time, cardboard boxes were used in the wholesale trade as outer packaging for the dispatch of clothing, for example. However, it turned out that cardboard boxes, in contrast to shipping bags, make up a relatively large proportion of the total shipment volume, which has a negative impact on transport costs.

Film bags are very space-saving, tear-resistant and lightweight compared to standard cardboard boxes. The use of coex shipping bags can therefore significantly reduce weight, which will automatically reduce the freight costs for transport. You also save on the use of adhesive tape or packaging tape.

If the only question was whether it would be better to use a shipping bag instead of cardboard box, the middle ground of using a cardboard shipping bag would be an option. But the first point is complicated by the fact that cardboard packaging material is far more harmful to the environment than plastic packaging. However, there is still a widespread misconception that plastic is not environmentally friendly and is more harmful to our environment than paper, as paper is biodegradable.

From an ecological point of view, the production of plastic packaging material is far better for our environment, as the instability of wood fibres means that more resources are required for the production of cardboard packaging and significantly more energy is used in the production of paper packaging. In addition, toxic chemicals are used to extract the wood fibres.

As Germany has strict legal requirements for the recycling of plastic packaging and films, German companies do not simply dispose of their plastic in the sea. Almost 100% of the plastic packaging used is melted down after disposal, processed and fed back into the economic cycle as regenerated goods.

So, when it comes to the issue of "too much plastic in the world’s oceans" (although it should actually be "too much synthetic materials in the world’s oceans", since plastic does not exist in the context of packaging material and "plastic" is just a colloquial word), you do not need to worry at all.

Another advantage of film shipping bags is that they enable much safer transport than conventional cardboard boxes, as a film bag is water-repellent and also extremely tear-resistant. In addition, the adhesive seal, also known as an adhesive strip or adhesive closure, makes it impossible to open the goods without clearly visible damage to the outer packaging, as the adhesive seal is highly adhesive, which is not so easy with cardboard boxes, as the box can simply be closed again with adhesive tape after opening. This is why a coex shipping bag is also ideal for use as a security shipping bag.

You don't have to worry about the return of textiles, for example. A film sleeve can also be produced in such a way that it can easily be used as a return shipping bag or reusable shipping bag. A double flap is used, with the two flaps separated from each other by a tear-off perforation. As you can see, coex shipping bags save costs and protect the environment, making them a very good replacement for cardboard boxes.

Material thickness of shipping bags

Our shipping bags are generally available in thicknesses between 50 my and 70 my or 75 my. This thicknesses make the film bags very sturdy, although the material costs are not too high, but the bags are still extremely tear-resistant.

Nevertheless, film shipping bags, whether thin or thick, can also be produced in other thicknesses, but may not be as stable and resilient as desired if produced in a thinner thickness. The material is anyway extremely robust and weatherproof. Coex shipping bags are also UV-stable / UV-resistant for several months.

Colours of shipping bags

A bag made of co-extruded tubular film is opaque, usually two-coloured and the most common colour combination is black/white - black on the inside and white on the outside (often also grey on the outside), whereby the black side makes the bag opaque and the white side is moisture-repellent and dirt-proof.

However, those who prefer colourful bags do not have to miss out on colour. Coex shipping bags can also be produced in colour and can even be printed in various colours if required. Please also note that Coex mailing bags are not available in transparent, but are in fact always opaque.

The closure of Coex shipping bags

A Coex shipping bag has either a straight flap or a slanted flap that is self-adhesive. As a Coex envelope is also intended to be used as a security bag, the seal or the adhesive on the self-sealing tape must have a strong adhesive strength.

This is why a permanent adhesive is used, which allows the closure to be glued to the bag so strongly that it is impossible to open it again after the first time without damaging the bag. This is called a security closure, or security bag.

If your self-seal needs to be permanently adhesive, but the mailing bag still serves as a reusable mailing bag, your film bag can also be produced with a double flap. To do this, simply attach a second adhesive flap to the bag, which is separated from the first by a tear-off perforation.

Are mailing bags possible to be printed?

Adhesive seal bags can of course also be printed. To do this, a so-called "cliché" is simply created according to the desired print. This cliché is elastic and is simply mounted on a cylinder head for printing, which is used to print the film mailers / adhesive seal bags during production.

Customised printing is no problem for us. Your customised print can consist of your company logo, but we can also print a warning text or warning notice, such as a children's warning print or a recycling logo, on the co-extruded films from which your bags are made.

Intended use of Coex shipping bags

Coex shipping bags are mainly used for shipping clothing. However, duplex flat bags are not only suitable for shipping textiles, such as T-shirts, socks, stockings, lingerie, underwear, shirts, jumpers or shoes. Coex shipping bags are also ideal for items such as valuables, jewellery, samples (e.g. laboratory samples and similar), office supplies, small items, folders, catalogues, calendars, customs envelopes.

A multilayer shipping bag can also be used as a film envelope for sending photos or pictures.

You have probably already received mail in a UPS bag or a DHL flat bag made of coex film. Amazon now also sends many products in polythene shipping bags. A coex bag is also very suitable as a mailing bag for important documents, although a document shipping bag made of coex film unfortunately has no field of vision. This means that the address field on the mailing bag cannot be seen, which is why the mailing bag must be labelled with a label or tags with the recipient's address on it before it is sent by post.

A Coex shipping bag can easily be labelled, franked or stamped. Of course, you can also write the addresses on these bags by hand using a permanent marker or a suitable pen.

In the majority of cases, you can also save on postage by using a coex envelope, as it weighs significantly less than the paper alternative.

How secure are Coex shipping bags?

Although Coex shipping bags are far more stable than normal LDPE bags, they do not protect against unwanted access to the contents. However, due to the strong adhesive seal, a coex shipping bag must be destroyed in order to access the contents, which means that unwanted access is immediately visible.

How sustainable are Coex shipping bags?

Like all other LDPE products, Coex shipping bags can be recycled as often as required. Coex shipping bags are therefore extremely sustainable - even more sustainable than cardboard packaging, for example.

Coex shipping bags made from recycled material are produced under the designation "PCR" (post consumer recycling) with a recycled content of up to 80%. The properties of the coex shipping bag are retained.

DHL friction coefficient

The friction coefficient, also known as COF (coefficient of friction), indicates the resistance that a film experiences when sliding over a surface. A lower COF means that a film bag can slide more easily over a surface. DHL has defined a COF range of 0.15 to 0.2, within which our Coex shipping bags are positioned.
