What is a foam film bag?
A foam film bag is a bag made from PE foam film, i.e. a foamed plastic film. It is folded and welded on two sides to create a bag that is closed on three sides and has one opening side. Foam film bags are one of the simplest packaging options, but that doesn't make them any less successful. With foam bags, you can safely deliver almost all fragile products to your customers.
What are foam film bags used for and how are they used?
Foam PE bags are generally used wherever impact and scratch protection is required. The foamy structure of the film, with many small air pockets, makes the PE foam very soft, flexible and shock-absorbing, so that it can be used in a variety of ways. As a three-sided sealed bag, it also serves as protection against scratches, dust and moisture.
The most obvious application is to simply fill the bag through the opening. This allows you to store small parts or place the foam bags over larger parts. Painted parts or coated goods in particular can be packaged wonderfully with a PE foam film bag. The soft surface of the PE foam prevents the sensitive surface from being scratched, while the product is perfectly protected from impacts thanks to the thickness of the foam of up to 6 mm.
These features make our foam bags very popular in surface coating, automotive and furniture industry. Other sensitive products for which our PE foam bags are suitable are porcelain, glass, mirrors, bottles and jewellery.
Another less obvious use is to crumple the bag to create a soft and flexible bulb that can be used to fill gaps and pad out already packed shipping units.
Of course, the bags can also be used for other purposes, for example as an interlayer for pallets, although foam film cuts tend to be used here.
Designs and properties of foam film bags
Depending on the intended use, we offer bags in many different versions.
We can add a tab or flap to the foam bag. You determine what length you want. Shorter flaps are ideal for opening the bag easier and faster during the packaging process. This reduces labour time and therefore packaging costs. Longer flaps are ideal for packaging very large and bulky goods such as chairs. You can put the bags over the back of the chair and then place the long flap over the seat to provide optimal protection for both.
Our PE foam bags can be optionally equipped with a self-adhesive closure, often referred to as an adhesive closure or pressure-sensitive adhesive closure. This makes it easy to seal the foam bag, which is not only easy for the user, but also saves costs, as the bags do not have to be sealed by hand.
To make it easier for the product to slide into the bag, we recommend protective foam bags with MDPE lamination on the inside. The MDPE film makes the inside of the bag very smooth, which prevents the surface of your product from sticking to the foam. The coating is particularly advantageous when packaging parts with an uneven surface structure, such as jewellery or wooden parts.
If you need to package electronic components, our antistatic foam film bags are of interest to you. They have a surface resistance of less than 10 to the power of 10 ohms and therefore dissipate the resulting voltage wonderfully so that your goods are not damaged.
Some of our customers use our foam film bags as food packaging for pralines or chocolate, because our foam is food-safe.
Our foam film bags can be printed any way you like for a full truck order. The only limits we set are a maximum of four printing colours and that we cannot provide the foam bags with a specific print, but can only print them in advance.
What colours are foam film bags available in?
Foam film bags are usually coloured white. Antistatic foam bags are the only exception, which are generally coloured pink. Of course, you can also order PE foam bags from us in any other colours such as blue, red, green, black, orange, pink, purple and yellow, but the minimum quantity is one full truck load. The bags are translucent or opaque in all cases, which ensures a certain level of discretion.
Dimensions of foam film bags
Basically, we can supply you with any dimensions you want. Whether it is landscape or portrait format, tubular, rectangular or square shape. Of course, there are production-related limits, particularly in terms of length. The maximum production length of the foam bags is 2 metres. In terms of width, your options are almost limitless.
How thick is the foam used to make the bags?
Foam film bags are available in thicknesses from 0.8 mm to 1 mm. The thicker versions of 0.8 - 1.5 mm are more suitable for low scratch protection, dust protection and moisture protection. If you want to protect your products, you should use film thicknesses of 2 mm - 5 mm, whereby the actual film thickness required depends on the product. The heavier the goods, the thicker the foam needs to be and the more weight each bag has to carry.
In the table below you will find the different foam thicknesses and an application example for each one.
| Thickness in mm | Application example |
|---|---|
| 0.8 | Interlayer chocolate packaging |
| 1.0 | Furniture scratch protection |
| 1.5 | Scratch protection for delicate furniture |
| 2.0 | PC impact protection, all-rounder |
| 3.0 | Impact protection for car body |
| 4.0 | Impact protection for sensitive goods for export |
| 5.0 | Highly fragile goods such as vases |
Which foam film bags are available from stock?

How are foam film bagsbpacked?
Our stock items are packed in handy cardboard boxes. For customised products, we specify the packaging unit in the offer. Of course, we can decide together in advance how many bags should be in a box and how big the box can be.
Are there accessories for the foam film bags?
For the foam film bags, you can get our beam welding machines directly from our shop, which you can use to easily seal the bags if you have decided not to use a flap.
Are there alternatives to foam film bags?
The most common alternatives are PE foam on a roll or foam film cuts. The rolls can be customised to each product, which is particularly useful for a very wide range of products, as many different dimensions need to be packed. The PE foam cuts are better suited as pallet interlayers or for crimping.
As already mentioned, the foam film bag is primarily suitable as impact and scratch protection and is to a certain extent a hybrid in this area of application. For product protection against impacts alone, air bubble bags are somewhat more suitable, as the air cushion between the film layers has an extremely shock-absorbing effect. If you only want to protect your goods against scratches and punctures, we recommend fleece bags, which stand out due to their firmer structure, but do not offer any impact protection.
What is the customs tariff number for foam film bags?
For foam bags manufactured within the EU, the customs tariff number is 39232100.
