What is a flat bag?

A flat bag is a plastic bag or plastic pouch, usually made from polyethylene or polypropylene, which has neither a bottom fold nor a side fold and also no closure, such as a press seal or an adhesive seal. Flat bags are made from tubular film. They have either a bottom seam or a side seam. However, flat bags are also produced with a bottom seam and a separating seam.

Intended use of PE bags

PE bags are used for many applications and purposes. They are used in industry, horticulture, agriculture, trade, commerce, warehousing/storage, shipping, transport, for storage, as packaging material, for sorting, in private households, etc. However, the main purpose of plastic bags is definitely the packaging of products and objects.

Polybags or packaging bags are used in the following industries or for the following purposes:

Dimensions, sizes and special sizes of flat bags

There are countless variations of flat bags in terms of size, material thickness, width and length. Everything is possible.

For example, a bag in landscape format (wide side open), length format (long side open), large, extra large, XXL, small, mini, no volume, large volume, long and narrow, wide and short, Din formats such as Din long, Din A 4, Din A 3, Din A 5 and so on.

Everything can be realised for our valued customers. Our flat bag stock range

In stock and here in the shop you will find a very large selection of dimensions, designs and thicknesses. From small (50 x 80 mm) to large (400 x 600 mm), you will find many sizes with different thicknesses.

Difference between flat bags and flat sacks

We refer to larger dimensions than 400 x 600 mm as flat sacks or PE sacks. Simply take a look at our category flat sacks or side gusset sacks if you require larger dimensions.

Colours of our plastic bags

The majority of plastic bags are transparent, clear or translucent. But, you can guess three times what we can do. Yes, you are right - we can do everything. Would you like an opaque PE bag in an opak colour? Or would you better prefer a translucent version? Or in colourful black, white, yellow, green, red, blue, orange, pink, purple, …

And, of course, we can also fulfil your every wish when it comes to film thickness. Our stock range offers you plastic bags in film thicknesses between 25 and 100 my. And on request, we can deliver any thickness between approx. 8 my (very thin) and 250 my (extremely thick).

Printing on flat bags

If you want your film bags to be printed, we are also the right partner for you. Polyethylene and polypropylene are easy to print on. Our spectrum ranges from certain standard prints to customised printing of your company logo or other advertising imprints. Here are a few examples to give you a better understanding.

Standard prints on PE bags:

Our prining company produces both one-sided and two-sided / double-sided prints. Of course, we offer single-colour and multi-colour prints. The print colours are usually defined in Pantone or RAL tones.

Before production, you will always receive a proof for print approval so that you can be sure that the print will be carried out exactly according to your specifications.

Weight calculation & density of LDPE bags

We will be happy to help you calculate the weight of your PE bags using a weight calculation. It's a very simple mathematical formula and you can calculate the weight of your batch of flat bags in no time at all.

The formula is as follows:

Width in millimetres x length in millimetres x thickness in millimetres x 2 x 0.92 (specific gravity) x quantity / 1000 = weight per 1,000 pieces

For example:

200 mm x 300 mm x 0.025 mm x 2 x 0.92 /1,000 = 2.76 kg per 1,000 pieces
You would like to order 10,000 pieces = 2.76 x 10 = 27.60 kg

This formula is of course also perfect for checking whether the correct film thickness has been delivered. In the film industry, people like to "cheat a little" when it comes to thickness…

So it does no harm to compare the theoretical weight with the actual weight from time to time.

Packaging of our bags

All our bags are packed in sturdy and handy cardboard boxes, usually 1000 pieces per box. In addition, all of our stock sizes are bundled together in packs of 100 with a rubber ring. All boxes are neatly and cleanly sealed with an adhesive tape. Pallets are packed with approx. 500 kg.

Environment & composition of polyethylene

Polyethylene is by far the most practical material for plastic packaging and for our environment. Polyethylene consists of carbon and hydrogen. It burns without leaving any residues and produces carbon dioxide and water. Here are the main advantages of polyethylene over paper, biodegradable plastics and jute in brief:

• Infinitely recyclable
• It burns without residue to form carbon dioxide and water
• Reusable multiple times
• Very low material thicknesses compared to the products mentioned above – yet extremely tear-resistant
• Waterproof and water-resistant
• Hygienic
• Completely non-toxic (no plasticisers, no heavy metals)
• No waste water or toxic exhaust gases are produced during manufacture

Bags made from biodegradable material / alternatives

What alternatives are there to PE bags and PP bags? This question is asked again and again. The answer is: NONE, or at least no alternative that is nearly as sustainable as PE/PP. To keep it reasonably short, we compare PE or PP here with compostable plastics made from, for example, corn or potato starch.

Pros & Cons - Bags made from biodegradable material / PE bags

Polyethylene is many times more environmentally friendly in its production and the extraction of raw materials than biodegradable plastics, which are often produced at great expense from corn, potato or soya starch.

These products have to be planted, fertilised, watered and harvested. The raw material is then produced in a complex process so that the product can be composted after one-time use. Today, compostable plastic bags also have to be produced with a film thickness that is around 15% higher in order to guarantee the same tear resistance.

Degradable plastic bags and their raw materials currently cost 3 – 4 times as much as conventional plastic bags. There is a high risk that bioplastics will decompose after a few months of storage in a carton.

As you can see, the debate and the search for replacements for plastic bags is a difficult task.

Conclusion:

Anyone who replaces plastic bags made of PE or PP with bags made of organic materials, paper bags or jute bags is doing MUCH more harm to the environment. We can only wish that the media will recognise this at some point and not continue to "blindly and with dangerous half-knowledge" keep on going down the same path.

Delivery and dispatch of LDPE bags & Co.

Depending on the quantity ordered, plastic bags are shipped either by parcel service or freight forwarding company. Smaller orders up to approx. 30 kg are shipped by parcel service (DHL), larger orders are delivered on pallets by our in-house freight forwarder.

The delivery time depends on whether it is a stock item or a customised item. Of course, stock items are dispatched immediately, usually on the same day. We produce custom-made products for you within 1 - 3 weeks (depending on the urgency, dimensions, quantity and design of the bags).

All shipments are generally sent free of charge, without shipping costs for our customers in Germany. Shipments abroad are realised with extremely favourable freight costs.

Pick-ups in Reutlingen from our "shop" are of course possible by arrangement.
