What Is a Film Bag?

A film bag is a “plastic bag” or poly bag, usually made from polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). The bag is open at the top and therefore, unlike zip lock bags or adhesive seal bags, has no closure mechanism. Plastic bags are manufactured either with a bottom seal or a side seal, using flat film, layflat tubing, or center-folded film.

What Material Are Bags Made Of?

What Can Plastic Bags Be Used For?

Plastic bags are extremely flexible and versatile. They protect products from dust, dirt, and moisture, making them suitable for nearly any application.

They are commonly used to store textiles or medical products, as they provide good dust protection and are food-safe. They are also ideal for storing fruit, vegetables, flatbread, or pet food.

Because PE bags are tear-resistant, they are widely used as protective packaging during transport to prevent damage. In warehouses, they help separate screws and other small components. They are also excellent for organizing and sorting various items. For even easier sorting, zip lock bags are available with a writing panel.

Difference Between Plastic Bags and Plastic Sacks

The only difference is the size. Our largest flat bag measures 400 x 600 mm (40 x 60 cm); anything larger is classified as a sack - flat sacks, poly sacks, or PE sacks.

The difference is therefore purely dimensional. All features such as bottom seal, side seal, perforation (on a roll), pin perforation, tear resistance, ESD (antistatic), VCI (anti-corrosion), printed or unprinted, etc., can also be applied to sacks.

Flat sacks can be made of LDPE, HDPE, MDPE, recycled material, and all other usable materials.

Colors of Our Film Bags

Most PE bags are clear or transparent. Because of their clarity, they are also called clear bags or transparent bags.

Do you need your bag to be opaque? No problem, we can manufacture plastic bags in any opaque color. Whether red, blue, yellow, green, pink, purple, orange, black, white, any color is possible.

We also offer translucent bags (light-diffusing, semi-transparent). Translucent means light-transmitting. Opaque means non-transparent.

Additionally, we can produce bags that are UV-resistant (for outdoor storage) or UV-blocking for full UV protection.

Printed Film Bags

We can print bags made from polyethylene or polypropylene without any issue.

It does not matter whether you need standard prints (such as warning notices, recycling symbols, “Green Dot”) or customized prints such as your company logo, brand, or any type of promotional print.

Film bags can be printed on one side or both sides, in single-color or multicolor.

Weight Calculation of Flat Bags

Here is a simple mathematical formula to calculate the weight of polyethylene flat bags:

Width × Length × Thickness × 2 × specific weight of LDPE (0.92) / 1000 = weight per 1,000 bags

Example: If you want to calculate the weight of 1,000 LDPE bags, 400 x 600 mm, 50 µ, the formula is:
400 × 600 × 0.05 × 2 × 0.92 / 1000 = 22.08 kg per 1,000 bags

If you want the weight for 3,000 pieces:
22.08 × 3 = 66.24 kg

It’s helpful to keep this formula in mind, especially when checking whether your goods were produced and delivered correctly and within tolerance.

Packaging Units of LDPE Bags

Film bags are usually bundled in packs of 100 pieces (secured with an elastic band) and packed into convenient, sturdy cartons of 500, 1,000, or 2,000 pieces. Most cartons contain 1,000 pieces. Each carton is securely sealed with packing tape and can, in principle, be shipped by parcel service without additional outer packaging. Our pallets are loaded with a maximum weight of approximately 500 kg.

Since flat bags, unlike zip lock bags or adhesive seal bags, do not have an integrated closure, there are several ways to seal them. They can, for example, be heat-sealed, or closed easily and securely with a twist tie.

PE and PP Film Bags and the Environment

Polyethylene is a very environmentally friendly material. An LDPE bag can be recycled endlessly, with the base material losing virtually no quality. Flat bags are reusable, hygienic, food-safe, and completely non-toxic, as they contain no plasticizers and no heavy metals.

During the production of both the material and the finished PE or PP bag, no toxic gases are released. In addition, polyethylene bags burn residue-free, producing carbon dioxide and water.
