What are FFP2 masks?

FFP stands for "filtering face pieces" and refers to the particle-filtering function of these half masks. This includes dust, smoke and aerosols. FFP masks are available in three different protection levels: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3. To ensure safety, the masks are certified throughout Europe in accordance with EN 139:2001+A1:2009. They were designed as dust protection masks as part of the occupational health and safety system. However, FFP masks have also been used in the medical sector for some time. The higher the protection class, the more effectively the mask filters against harmful substances.

How do FFP2 masks help?

The primary function of these face masks lies in providing protection for the wearer. To filter out harmful substances, the inside of the mask contains a special filter layer that has been electrostatically charged. This ensures that not only large pollutant particles are kept out, but also much smaller ones such as aerosols.

Features of our FFP2 masks

So that you don't have to look for where you have put your mask and it doesn't get stuck in your pocket, the masks can be folded to a fraction of the normal size without losing any of their function.

How do you identify FFP2 masks?

You can recognise an approved FFP2 mask by a CE mark followed by a four-digit number that indicates the approved testing institute. According to the IFA, the class (FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3) is followed by the suffix "NR" for non-reusable masks or the suffix "R" for reusable masks. There is also the suffix "D". These masks have passed the dolomite dust test. The mask is also labelled with the number and year of publication of the European standard and the manufacturer's name or brand.

How to wear FFP2 masks correctly?

FFP masks must be worn absolutely tight around the face. If the masks do not fit snugly around the face, they protect much less, as the exhaled air can pass through these gaps. For those who have a beard in particular, this can require the beard to be shaved off.

The masks should always only be touched at the edges. In addition, you should wash your hands before and after taking them off. The noseband must be adjusted so that it sits well on the nose bridge.

The correct procedure:

  • Pre-form the noseband
  • Pull the lower headband over the head and place it at the back of your neck.
  • First, fit the chin into the mask and then pull it over the nose.
  • Then place the upper headband above the ears.
  • Adjust the headband
  • Adjust the noseband
  • Check that the mask fits correctly

How long can a FFP2 mask be worn?

As a rule, FFP2 masks are disposable products which are used for health and safety at work. However, the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends only using the mask for up to eight hours or less if it is heavily soaked.

How can masks be cleaned?

For private use, a team of researchers from Münster has found ways to reuse FFP2 masks. Here, the "seven-day rule" strictly applies. This means that once a mask has been worn, it must “rest" for seven days. The team assumes that the viruses will lose their infectiousness during this time and that they can be reused. However, this also means that seven masks are needed per person and that respiratory masks should not be exchanged within the family.

Theoretically, it is possible to shorten the regeneration time of a mask by "baking" it in the oven at a constant 80°C for 60 minutes with top and bottom heat. However, this procedure should be used with caution, as the constant heat of the oven must be guaranteed. 10°C is too little and the viruses are not killed properly and 100°C is too much and the mask could catch fire.

It is therefore important to stock up on a sufficient supply of FFP2 masks.
